Timing chain ate my cover
« on: Oct 08, 2006, 12:42:29 AM »
I have got an 83 22r and the timing chain chewed through the chain cover into the water pump area and I was wondering if anyone knew if a timing chain cover from the earlier double row chain would work? the reason is that i cant seem to find any single row covers that are not chewed up but there are lots of double row covers in perfect shape.

You're replacing the timing chain right?  Did you already buy a kit, because I believe they're not too much more when bought in kit form.

you can sometimes find a good cover on ebay.  you can also, as kneedown was saying, find a timing chain set with cover on there too.  your best bet would to check with engnbldr.com for your parts if you don't want to do ebay, which he also sells on.  Also, when you do this work, don't put plastic guides back in or else you are going to run into the same problem.  Spend the little extra  :twocents: and buy the metal backed guides. :turtle:

If you've got an '83 engine you can convert it to a double row chain simply by changing the oil pump drive spline and buying a dual row timing chain set. Also, all '84 down 22r timimg covers are the same. If you've got one for a dual row chain it will work. You'd be crazy not to go ahead and put a dual chain in it if you've already got it apart.

I am kind of going for the cheapest route because I am just trying to get this truck running to sell it but I cant seem to find any covers that are not chewed up. However all of the dual row covers are in good shape.

Wait, I'm confused.  I thought the early ones came with the dual row and the later ones came with a single row.  My 84 has a dual row.  :headscratch:

wermz yours probably has just been converted to a dual row.  but anyway if the dual row cover will bolt right up then do I use a dual row oil drive spline?

I got a cover from a 20r and the water pump was shot so I just put the one from the single row 22r on and it fits and works fine

OHH P.S. you have to use the oil drive spline from the single row not the dual row
