timing chain cover

di i have to take my head off to replace my timing cover on my 22r? any helpfull advice?

No, you do not. It is a little hard to get back together unless you drop the oil pan at the same time.

i was changing my oil pan gasket and broke off 2 bolts in the timing cover and the broke the easy in 1 off the holes so the pan is off

Remember to pull the top bolt right below the cam gear hidden in the pool of oil.

the hidden bolt is located in the head



Prisim what about the small section that seals against the head and the timing cover.

Personally when ever i do a timing thing i take the head off and replace the head gasket and have the head resurfaced.

In the front of the head below the camshaft timing gear. It runs down into the cover. Everybody forgets that one at least once & wonders why the cover won't come off. lol

Mike, if you are carefull, the head doesn't need to come off. I have done it without taking the head off twice.

Well almost always you will get some of the gasket. but yes it can be done but i just like the assurance of having a new head gasket

There is no real pressure to worry about where they seal like there is to the part of the head that seals to the pistons & water jacket. I have never had sealing problems after doing it that way. I am lazy also.

dude, prism is right,  your pan is already off,  pull your valve cover pull your distributor then get that bolt out pull the timing cover drill whatcha gotta drill and go back together with some rtv,  never had a problem

sweet thanks is there a difference between covers on the 20r and the 22r and the water pumps/pullys? cause im trying to save money i have access to a comlpete 20r motor any advice would be helpful

what year 22 is it?

22 is an 87 and i think the 20 is like 78?

i think the 20R timing cover will only work on an '81-84 22R

you "can" use the 20R cover but it will need to be cut down,  im fairly sure it will bolt on, but will be about .200" to high,  lcengineering has the timing conversion kit for making it a double row chain and it come with the timing cover guides and chain

yeah i got a new cover the chain stays are fine im starting to put it back to gether now but will the waterpump and pulley off the 20 work on my 22
