cooling ?
« on: Oct 05, 2006, 08:29:23 PM »
I have a 81 toyota 4x4 with a stock 22r and it keeps boiling over a lot.I have put in a new thermostat and radiator cap but that hasn't helped at all. I can drive for 5 minutes and it just pours out. I felt  all  my hoses and there all warm.So does anyone have an idea of whats going on.
thanks in advance josh :beerchug:

The copper pellet should go down into the intake.  Do you have bubbles in your coolant?  How about floaty black things?  When it's cool, pop the cap and fire it up.  When the stat opens, you'll see flow.  See if you have bubbles or floaties.

well, it shouldn't go past half way.  AFAIK, that's normal operating temperature.

what do you mean, everywhere? ALL the hoses?  do you have a leak in a hose/loose clamps, etc.  Open the hood, fire this thing up and wait.

what kind of shape is the radiator in? Does it flow ok or is it cloged?  What about your water pump, is it sealed tight or in questionable condition especially around the bearing seal?

The reason why your gauge is not going above half way is because the guage is not making a good connection, therefore not reading accurately.  To fix this problem you need to get the back of the gauge and clean off the connectors behind the gauge.  This will allow the gauge to read properly.

Mine does the same thing.  I fire it up its at half way.  The coolant is boiling over its still at half way.  I have just read on how to fix the problem.  This is why a lot of people run aftermarket temp gauges that work well.

Mine has never worked correctly, it does tha exact same thing that you have described.  Sometimes it bounces from cold to overheating when I first start it, then goes to half way after less than a minute.  Gonna have to try cleaning the connections..
