T100 Transmission swap
« on: Sep 19, 2006, 06:27:07 PM »
I have a 1996 T100 with a R150 5spd transmission that needs a rebuild. A friend of mine has a  R150F from a 2002 Tacoma 4X4 and only 35K miles.
Are the two trannys relatively interchangeable? I would be putting a 4x4 tranny into a 2WD vehicle. Can the rear part of the trans be swapped?

Thanks

Suspect the 2X transmission case has a different tail-housing bolt pattern than that for the 4X4.
If I put in the whole 4x4 trans with the TC then I would need the shorter drive shaft. Its probably got an electronic speedo too.

Thanks for the info..

It is true that the 96 T100 and the 02 Tacoma both use the same style gear sets, [one piece 5th, rev fork], however the 2wd has a much longer 23 spline output shaft for the slip yoke found only on the 2wd transmission.

You can interchange the 02 gear set, but the transmission will need to be completely disassembled to change the output shaft. This includes using a press and taking care to keep the complete gear set togeather as a set.

Make sure you reuse the T100 3.4 bellhousing, it does not have the same lower bolt pattern as the Tacoma.
