I grabbed some 7018 AC rod and gave it a shot on high power 110V on some clean scrap 1/4 inch. Could barely get it to arc, never mind hold an arc. How come the 6011 will fire right up but the 7018 doesn't want to, jsut needs more power?
Are you sure you got the 7018 that is rated for AC? I didn't know they made it until about 2 months ago; when I started welding, 7018 was DC only rod. What you describe is a classic sign of using a DC rod on an AC system.
I am thinking of grabbing some more 6013...I really am not doing much over 3/16's which I think is the max that rod is recomended for.
