power steering cooler
« on: Sep 05, 2006, 07:34:16 PM »
How many of you are using after market coolers for your power steering?  Is there a real need for one?

I was thinking of running one, but I am not sure if my stock power steering pump would be able to keep pressure with that much more fluid.

Any info or advice would be   :smooch:

Thanks in advance

Matt

There is a guy on pirate (I think) who got a junk yard Toyota ps res. and kinda cut the top off his and the bottom off the other, stacked them, welded them together, and re mounted it so now it has twice the capacity.  I think he did this for a hydrolic ram but it should help keep the stock steering cooler.

I ran a trans cooler on my Toyota power steering set up on my old Samurai. It was a Celica box and pump and it ran HOT without it. Now on my 4 Runner, I thought I was going to run into the same problem, but so far so good. :crossed: I have 2 trips to the Hammers and 4 to Big bear and it doesn't seem to get hot at all so I would say you don't need it. :twocents: I guess it would depend on the type of terrain you are running, tire size and if you are locked up front. :driving:

If you do run one, I think the pump can handle the extra volume (the Celica pump did fine). :)
