Front end with calipers in front??
« on: Aug 25, 2006, 06:47:05 AM »
Hey I was just wondering if anyone has seen a front end (mine is a 79) with the brake calipers mounted on the front side of the axle. Could it be landcruiser or just a 79 thing or what. Either way it looks cool.

they have the knuckles on the wrong side of the axle this puts the calipers on the front instead of the back like they should be

Im gonna have to agree with 79coyote on this one.  Someone in the past mounted the knucles wrong.

Ill get some pics up here after labor day weekend. My truck has 8 1/2" lift and 37's and drives killer- and Im really picky. 1. Is there any way they could be on wrong and still work that good. 2. Is there any reason to change them or are they just turned around?  :sheerterror:

because they didnt know what they were looking at or talking about
how many times do you need to hear why the calipers are on the front,    THE KNUCKLES WERE MOUNTED ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE AXLE

What I am asking is, is there any practical reason to change them back, caster and camber are good and It drives really good. With them being on different sides would that throw the geometry off or are they just "not how they are supposed to be" Im just trying to be practical

no  not as long as you arent in mud, thats why they should be on the back so  any mud or dirt gets pushed off  instead of sitting on top and causing undue wear

i wouldnt worry about it,  just remember the next time you have the knuckles off or plan on any maintainance,  new bearings whatever

i wouldnt take it apart just to put them back on the right side

Thanks Coyote, I feel kinda stupid I didnt notice. I thought about them being upside down which would be obviosly wrong but I didnt even think about them being on the wrong side. I think Ill change them Im putting in a high pinion w/ elocker and 30 sp super set anyway

just  pull the calipers  and  hang them up  on  the axle  and swap sides on the knuckles

might as well install a knuckle rebuild kit while your in there

you can't bleed them if they are upside down.  caster and camber should be the same for both nuckles either way they are mounted also.
