Since I live and work in Oregon - is there a way I can get a Camp fire permit from the Cali Forest Service via mail/phone? Or do I HAVE to physically pick that up on my why thru Cali?

Also has the trail been scavanged clean of dead wood or should I just plan on bringing my own campfire wood? I would assume the later......

No need to worry about the wood.  Unless you're going to camp in one of the exempt areas you can't have a campfire anyway.  You'll need the permit for a propane stove/lantern/etc.  Check the ENF website for more info:  http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/eldorado/

I called around and I figured out that you can NOT get a Camp Fire Permit via the mail or web. You HAVE to show up in person at a US Forest Service office. BTW they are free of charge.... I was recommend to get one here:

There are a couple different places you can get one, NFS, BLM, CDF, etc.  However, if you camp with enough people who have one, you don't really have to worry about it.  Every single person doesn't have to have one (I've got one  )

Fire restrictions are in place in EDNF right now. There is no fires permitted at all. Except you can use a propane stove to cook. You still need to have the fire permit to operate the stove.
