What can I do to upgrade my brakes on a budget???????
« on: Jul 31, 2006, 10:35:10 PM »
I have a stock 84 brake setup right now and when I brake the truck pulls real hard to the left.
So it makes me believe that I need some new rotors or have mine turned with some new pads.
BUT while I do this if I could swap some parts from other new models that work better calipers, rotors etc.
would be the time to do it.  Long explanation I know.

So can I swap anything out at the same time?

A common bolt-on upgrade is vented FJ rotors and IFS V6 calipers. The rotors dissipate heat better and the V6 calipers are a bit larger.

Also, get a good pressure bleeder...getting ALL the air out of the system really makes a noticable difference.
IFS is best kept at ambient temperature in a pile of scrap in the backyard.  When kept under a functioning vehicle, it tends to greatly diminish said vehicle's offroad ability.     -reklund5

I have v6 calipers on my 87 and the brakes feel better than in my trans am. It is a worthy upgrade.

I think you can put the larger rear drums from an IFS truck on your rear axle.

Thanks guys for the help I will let you all know how it turns out.
Might as well change to some stainless brake lines.

Any recommendations on where to find some decent lines?

I am running some brake lines from All-Pro. they are pretty nice, a little pricey but they are quality.

I think if you use t he V6 calipers, you also have to change the master cyl.  I just did this upgrade using the rotors off an FJ80 and the calipers off a 86 4cyl 4runner and had no problems with needing a master cyl.  Had to grind some slag off one of the calipers to get the wheel to fit though.

Just as a thought, you say your truck pulls when braking. Is it stock or have you lifted it? If you lifted it do you still have push pull steering or have you upgraded to High steer. Now if you lifted your truck and did not upgrade to High Steer or upgrade the stock steering that could be the problem and upgrading your brakes won't help. You would be experiencing bump steer under braking.

I've heard of it doing it either way depending on how high you go, 3 inch lifts tend to send you right, 5-6 will change things since when you go that high most people also remove the torque rod. This does only apply if you have push pull steering though, so if it has High Steer my point is mute.

Does anybody have the part numbers for these pieces? I work at a parts store and could probably cross the numbers and save a little $!
