5 speed Transmission pops out of first gear
« on: Jul 27, 2006, 06:44:58 PM »
Hi, I am having a problem with my 1991 4Runner, 4wd, sr 5, V6 transmission. The shifter has been popping out of first gear so today I went to the dealer and got a couple of parts that I thought would fix the problem . I put in a new bushing at the base of the shift lever and a new rubber seat that went into the transmission housing. When I took the shifter out from the transmission and cleaned it up I noticed that on the  shift lever above the shaped metal "bulb" what seemed to be a lot  of broken hard rubber or plastic pieces. I just cleaned it up, then removed the old seat from the housing and it was worn but intact, not broken into little pieces like I told it would be. So when I look at the parts drawing from the dealer I don't see any replacement part for whatever caused the broken plastic pieces i found on the shift lever itself.  Putting it back together, it popped  out of gear again so I know something is still wrong. Hope someone here can help with this problem and give me some advice.

Sorry I don't have any pics of the broken bits. These broken bits were found where the spring meets the top of  the shift lever "bulb". There were bits of material that I brushed out of the bulb and also pieces in the spring that I removed. The material was enclosed by the fitting that you have to rotate to the left to remove the shift lever. No broken pieces were found in the houseing when I removed the lever. Thanks for your help on this.

I will take  it apart again and take some photos but as I think about it now the rubber dust cover was complete without any damage.
Thanks again.
