Tire Suggestions Need Advice
« on: Jul 24, 2006, 07:30:52 PM »
Hey guys, i keep getting different people telling me to get different tires, my truck will manily be for 4x4ing, not much road driving and is not a  daily driver..... its a 80 yota pickup with a 4 speed tranny and a 20R engine, its got 5.29 Yukon gears and Locked front and rear, and i will be running some Longfield Super Birfields........
What would you suggest for my truck...
again here are my truck specs, also would my truck be to underpowered for 38s

5.29 Yukon Gears
4 Speed Tranny
20r engine
Aussie Locker in Front and Welded rear
Longfields ( Just the birfs )

here what i was thinking

a 36 inch TSL Swamper
a 35 Inch TSL Bogger
a 38 Inch TSL Swamper
a 37 Inch MTR
a 36 INCH TSL IROK

I am kinda leaning twords the 36 inch swamper or the 38 inch swamper, would my truck be two underpowered for the 38s

It may be a little underpowered, but with the gearing, and the fact that your truck isn't going to see much on road driving, you'll prolly be alright.

I'd go ahead and cross the MTRs off your list, they're good tires, don't get me wrong; but they're a compromise for onroad manners and off road preformance.  Since you're doing mostly off-road, you may as well go with swampers.

Hey guys, i keep getting different people telling me to get different tires

You're going to hear a hundred answers from a hundred people. Driving conditions, climate, terrain will all be factors in determining which tires are the best fit.

The boggers are directional and too wide.

If you have stock low range gears and going to play in deep mud you may want to go 36" swampers, but the 38's will give you better clearance and you can always get the 4.7 gear set to help you turn them.

Boggers will require more power and have to move more mud to advance forward.

Swampers on the other hand will not dig as fast giving you a little more control before digging straight down and they work better with less power and work both ways the same.

I am turning 38's with just over 65 hp, 5.29's, but have a choice of 3 differant low ranges.

you will have to watch the clutch if you get bogged down, but this is true with any tire you use.

Thanks Willy...... i have one more stupid question, the 38s are sounding quite nice , i have the 80 pickup right now, its got the 20r engine and a 4 speed , its running stock gears right now with 33 inch bfg all terrains, would the 38 swampers with the 5.29 gears have a lower ratio then the 33s with stock gears, cause i relly dont like the startoffs, there two gutless, i let me freind drive it and he kept on stalling it........
Also would i have enough power to spin those 38 swampers cause im gona have an aussie locker in the front and im gona weld me rear end .... or should i be fine,  i plan on doing at little mud.... lots of small types of trails, maby some bigger trails in the future.....

a bigger tire is going to make your roll off a little slower no matter what gears you use. It is all about the weigh of a larger tire + the extra gear ratio it will cause and the lack of HP to overcome the extra strain.

4.10's with 33" is going to be 2700 rpm at 65 mph.
5.29's with 38" is going to be 3040 rpm at 65 mph.

so yes it will be lower by about 300 rpm.

5.29's with 36" is 3209 at 65 mph for an extra 500 rpm over stock.

If you don't drive on steep hills all the time on the street or tow I would go with the 38's, but if you need the extra power go with the 36's.

Here is the chart for you to look at. http://www.4lo.com/calc/geartable.htm

I have the same motor and axle gears with 36" Iroks. I have duals, but both with stock 2.28:1 ratios.  On some steeper climbs here in Moab 1st gear low can start to power out, but usually isn't too bad as long as I am paying attention.  However, In the mud is a different story. (or deep snow) The 20r just dosen't have the power to spin the tires in normal low if you are in thick stuff, and double low will spin them but dosen't generate enough wheel speed to be that useful.
You have a Jeep?  That's cute.... So does Barbi.

i guess i should just go with the 36 inch swampers, it will be less strain on my birfs too.....  and i do like the mud  :yesnod:
and it should be pretty good for some crawling, cause my truck right now with 33 inch tires and i guess they are 4.10 gears ( STOCK ) is  pretty decent in 4 low, so is that what you would recomend for me is the 36 inch swamper......
