If you watched any of the local news Friday night you saw the flash-flood warnings in the Sierras.  One part of that was for Kaiser Pass Rd that was damaged.  We managed to pass this area and make it to the trail head.  The other club that was going to take the lead in didn't show so we headed in without them. Many of the areas south of Lake Camp are still very wet and infested with Mosquitoes.  We found 3 or 4 down trees that we made short work of and made it to Ershim Lake about 2:00pm after working on some sheared knuckle studs on a Toyota.  We found 2 large trees down in the camp ground the were almost 3' in diameter and one large branch that fell from ~100' up.  It started raining just after we got camp and setup.  Nothing real bad but a lot of thunder and a little light show too.  This morning we got the trees cut up in to manageable sizes and cleared out and cut some fire wood for the next visitors (you're welcome).  Left Ershim Lake about 11:00am and hit Kaiser Pass about 3:30pm.  We locked the gate behind us pending a report to the USFS about the wet conditions.

We locked the gate behind us pending a report to the USFS about the wet conditions.

Are they usually pretty cautious about opening the trail?  When do you think it will be open to the rest of us?

Thanks for taking the time to clean things up.

I don't know how they do that.  We just left the gate the way we found it and we'll just let them make the call.  If I hear it's open I'll be sure to post up.  I suspect it should be within the next week or so.

The latest news:

4WD Club of Fresno went in from the Courtwright Lake side and made it about 2mi. past Summit Lake.  They cut 40 trees from the trail and fought much more rain than we did at Ershim.  I hear they ran short on fuel and time had to turn back.  So at this time the trail is still closed.  I suspect they will have another crew go in this weekend to finish the job.  I’ll post up what I know when I now it.

Kind of related.  I was wondering how long the drive into Courtright is from Shaver Lake.  Yahoo maps says the ~35 miles will take close to 2 hours driving time.  Is that accurate?

Also curious, if the Fresno 4 wheeler group goes in @ Courtright this weekend, would another group be able to follow them in?  (Guess this would be better directed towards the Fresno group.)

Thanks for the updates.  We've got a group hoping to run Courtright to Kaiser Sat - Tue, but we'll be there all week if we can't get in this weekend.

I'm aware that the Dusy wasn't opened as planned... We have had a very busy week with multiple lightning fires, floods, and rockslides. The clubs that went in to open the trail did a great job in getting a lot of trail cleared despite trying conditions. Dusy will open as soon as conditions improve on the trail... If planning a Dusy trip this week or in the near future, be prepared that it might not be Open and that Swamp Lk is a great alternative.

I would say it takes at least an hour.  It's been a couple years since I went in the bottom side.  The road is windy and if you're in a trail rig chances are it handles like a wet rag in the corners.

I would have to answer no on following the Fresno Club in.  If for no other reason they have another 8+ miles of trail to work on and thats after traveling some 14mi to get to where they left off Sunday.  The trail is just not ready yet.

Uhhmm, to all that feel like Mike. It was FRIGGIN' cold last October when we went in to close it. Just off the top of my head, I know of three tent heaters and two -30 degree bags that were purchased once we all got home! However it was yet another great trip with all the usual Hill Hoppers and friends in attendance.

(note to self: bring more  next time!)  :beerchug:

With the uncertainty as to when my daughter will make her grand appearance, I am hoping I can  :driving: this year's closing trip with you guys. :crossed:

Unless we get a rare early storm it's just cold.  I've never had snow there, just frost.  The first year the lake froze 5' from the shore line out all the way around

Well Mike there are 2 clubs that work the Dusy.  The Hill Hoppers and Fresno Club.  I think Marlin is still a member of Fresno.  The Hill Hoppers only do the campground at Ershim Lake.  Although myself and one other are Fresno members too so we get both sides.  Sometimes Fresno doesn't like non-members going for insurance reasons.

Hey Mike

One of the main reasons I joined the Fresno Club is to help with trails.

It's a working club with a lot of great people in it who care & give of their time & money to keep these trails open.

Once you join, and let them know you are available to help they will call you & let you know what crews are going to work on what trails & when.

All this usually happens in early summer of course in order to get the trails open.

Also,
I think there has been 5 pit toilets approved & funded already that are being planned & put together in sections so we can take them up & install them. Probably not till next summer but we are going to need people with capable rigs that can pull trailers full of sections & equipment to get these done.

Sorry, This is starting to sound like a recruitment post.

Anyways come to a meeting & bring CruiserDave with you. I've been working on him for a while

We (4THEWKN & I) planned on doing Dusy for a year now, but last month I got word it was still closed.  So, last weekend we ended up going into Strawberry lake at night on friday.  Then saturday we went to Coyote lake after seeing the Harrington Lake aftermath!  The rain was quite enjoyable, and the lighting storm was cool.  But the freakin mosquitoes were quite hungry!  For my first rockcrawling adventure it rocked!  I would love to do Dusy if I ever get the chance!
