i had an idea of putting a mazda 13B turbo rotary engine in my 85 toy. i did a search on here and didnt come up with anything. but what really makes me want one of these motors is that they only weight around 170 pounds, have a 13,000 rpm redline, and put out around 250 hp for stock. they may not be torque monsters but its nothing that dual cases cant fix right ? so if anyone has an info or knowledge on this engine i would like to hear it. im researching about it as much as possible. and i think it would be cool to have this in a toy because im sure very few to zero people have done this, just a chance to be different i guess. and i know i would have to switch trannies which isnt a big deal, you chevy guys do it so why not with a mazda? the only thing that would keep me from doing this would be something that would be impossible to get around. then in that case, i know where i could get a 5mgte in a complete supra for 1k. oooooh yeah

I've heard of this being done to Samurai's might want to check with those folk before putting it in a larger vehicle.

Low end is what you want not top end.    Why not just go with a surplus helicopter jet engine they have more power the faster they go and won't redline at 13,000.

I dont think that swap is a good idea. As said above you do want low end power. Rotary motors are ment to be in the high r's and love to be rapped out. I hear great things from people have done chevy 4.3 swaps. Just some thoughts, good luck.

like i said i want to be different and not do what everyone and their mom has in their toys. i dont see why it would be a bad choice if that jake hollenbeck guy put one in that buggy. and last time i check rock crawlers crawl unless he rock races the thing..im just going to research more and ask on some RX-7 boards to see what a 13B turbo will run, im guessing a fair chunk of change. but the best part is i would have the fastest toy around here 8)

if you want to be different, then put a Cummins 4bta 4 cylinder in your yota.
biggest difference is the gobs of torque and getting 35 mpg

 There is a guy here in Oklahoma that has a mazda rotary in a buggy on mog axles. That thing kicks ass, it sounds like a pissed off hornet but it will go anywhere he points it.

It really depends on how light your rig will be, because as previously stated they're dogs on the bottom, which would be a bad combo.  Anything heavier than a sammy is going to negate any top end advantage.  Top end power is only good if you can get it up.

Like others have said, lots of revs but not a lot of torque. Another consideration, rotary engines get poor gas mileage. They are fun though.

I have been thinking about a supra motor next winter, I thought about a 350, 4.3, 302, etc..    All those swaps are popular not because people copy each other, but because they work great for most people and are easy to do.  I don't think there is anything wrong with any motor as long as it fits your needs and your driving style.

I don't put my truck in low rang and crawl over large rocks,  I hold it to the rev limiter and drop the clutch to tear as much up as possible, that means a high revving motor is for me.  I also live in western Washington were it is always muddy with hills and holes everywhere so I need wheel spin, and a rev happy motor that obviously makes enough power up top, is not a problem, besides, high revs please crowds

Something to remember though, just because an engine likes to rev doesn't mean it will want to stay up there.  A lot of pipey engines will easily bog, even if you had it pegged already, given the right circumstances.

I guess that you are talking about an FD motor available in RX-7's from 93-95, that would be twin turbo and 225hp. You are talking about dealing with wiring issues like no other, and a great amount of $$. I have owned several RX-7's and they are alright, but I would not think about swapping them into anything heavier than a RX-7.

If you are not talking about an FD, then your HP numbers are way off. Porting a rotary will free up power at the top, but take it away at the bottom.

lots of low end torque but enough upper end power to still scew over the wilderness.

I think it would be really cool to go that route, and to shut up all of these torque-naysayers, install a Camden 13B Supercharger 8)
