rear axle leak
« on: May 03, 2006, 12:41:55 PM »
after swapping in my new 3rds, my driverside rear axle leaks bad. Looks like the leak is coming from under the drum area. What exact seals do I need? (Inner axle seal, Outer seal, Bearing?)

Sounds like the seal that's pressed into the end of the axle housing.   It might have been damaged during the swap.  You have to be real carefull sliding the axle shaft's in or out, not letting the weight of them rest on the seal.  They are not very expensive.  Hope this helps.

I would agree and they are fairly easy to fix and inexpensive.

yes, more than likely.  as mentioned above, you really have to be careful when pulling your axle shafts not to disturb that seal.  either way, sometimes they 'just leak'.  i have torn apart dozens and dozens of Toyota rear axles....and even with all the proper pre-cautions and steps taken, sometimes it'll just happen
NOT an expensive fix or hard problem to solve though.....

leaking oil from the seal shouldn't empty out all your gear oil....you can drive with a leaky seal for a long long long time and still have oil in the diff.

yeah when I look in the diff, I can still see alot of diff fluid and when i refill it barely takes a few squeezes and it starts to leak from the filler nut. I just dont wanna waste burning up my new gears.

Haha I have the same problem, I was actually worried that I tore up a bearing but I guess those seals are pretty sensitive. They are only like 8 bucks from Kragen. I just have to get around to changing it. Been leaking oil for a while now. Maybe that will be my chore for today.

i say, if posssible, wait until you can get a hold of a IFS rear axle that doesn't leak. then just swap axles. that's what i did. drove on my leaky axle seal for over 3 years without topping it off once. now it's time to upgrade to the IFS which will give me NO leaky seals! 2 birds with one stone. oh, since i'll have to disconnect the brake lines...im upgrading to the 26" lines while im at it. oh, and i found a 17gal gas tank too. and since i have to drop the gas tank to disconnect the ebrake cable to do the swap, i throwing that in too....4 birds total.
