R151 Turbo Tranny to 20R Engine....will it work?
« on: Apr 30, 2006, 05:14:11 PM »
My buddy just bought an original 1979 Toyota 4x4 with a good running 20R motor.  He is interested in using a R151 Toyota turbo tranny in place of the L43 4-Speed.  Will it directly bolt up, or will it require an adapter???

1983 Toyota 4x4 P/U, short bed, 3" Custom ALCAN front springs...they make 104" Wheelbase, 2" Rancho-cheapie rear springs with 1" machine-shop fabricated shackles, 31's on 15x8 AR Outlaw I's, square front driveshaft. New CARB., fuel pump, exhaust. 120K original miles!!!  Bed has little rust!!

direct bolt up to the engine. but not a direct bolt up to your crossmember or factory shifter holes. turbo tranny is longer so you just have to adjust for that

yea 20R  and 22R  are the exact same block  besides the size of the piston,  R151 is the baddest  tranny of them all guard it with your life

but it wont bolt right into the truck , your tranny shifter will come out where your tcase shifter is now  and you'll have to cut your driveshafts,  shorten the rear and make the front longer

now what you could do is talk to cruzerdave or Marlin and trade that R151  in for a lot of $$  off the price of a L52HD   it will bolt right into the 79  with no modifications
