They all make a bit of noise, but checking the valves is easy and would be cheap insurance.

Hopefully it isn't your timing chain slapping around cuz the guide is gone. My last engine sounded like a diesel because of that.  :twocents:

If it is the timming chain get it fixed before it eats a hole in the cover. I have unfortunatly done that one, started while I was wheeling it in Truckhaven and by the time I got to Cherry Valley I was spitting oil all over the place.

If it's the front of the motor it is more than likely the timing chain, adjusting the valves won't help.

goat is it more of a ticking sound ? from up front ? then it's the chain.  but do your valves.

There realy is no trick , motor warm   and a feeler gauge 2 sizes  start at top dead center  and do the in/ex  valves U can get  then flip er over and do the rest.

I see the problem know, there's these little rocking things in here,  I'm gonna go and pull em out!   :hammerhead:

:werd:  It would suck to spring a leak!   Oil RS? :headscratch: I thought the leak would be from a water jacket.  :dunno:

It all depends on where it makes the hole, if it takes out the front of the cover you'll get water and oil mixing inside, if your chain bangs the side it will gnaw a hole that will spit oil all over the place. Fortunately lots of RTV will fix it enough to get it home if it's on the side of the case.

**Revive**  But now I'm having the noise!

Problem -- Loud ticking, clicking type noise, mostly under acceleration.
Checked -- Timing = 5 Deg BTDC
Valves = Just got done rechecking them.  All good, one a tiny bit loose, one a tiny bit tight

OK, everything leads me to think the timing chain guide.  I shined a flash light down there while the cover was off but they looked ok.  even poked at them with a screw driver, no movement.  Any thing else I can test before I just tear it apart?  Maybee there broken lower.  Maybee the tensioner is stuck and it's slapping against the guide??

I did just notice puting it all back together that my air box has a 7" crack on the bottom around the carb.  :haha:  could this be affecting my vacuum advance?  don't think so?  Could explain why I only hear it under ecceleration.  :dunno:    going to buy a new box tomorrow after the holiday..

Its sounds like your timing chain guide is broken below your view. mine broke about 3 weeks ago, cost me a new timing chain assembly (crank & cam gears, guides and chain) some JB weld (to fix the crack in the front cover)2 head gaskets, #4 intake vavle (<<my fault) 38/38 weber carb+offenhauser intake, and oil. all in all about $500+ dollars. bwst thing to do is buy the timing set, but make sure to buy a head gasket, oil pan gasket, sealant (right stuff silicone or gaskecinch) and a 18 paxk of beer before its too late.

wermz, youve never heard of the long screwdriver trick? its an old mechanics trick...... basically, it acts as a stethoscope and intensifies the noise, it also wont pick up all noise, and pretty much just picks up what you touch the end to

did you clean pout the oil pan? if you broke a guide, that menas there a bunch of little pieces floating around..... and that noise could be that, or oil starvation, as those little pieces can and will clog up oil passages

Sewing machine = typical 22r from my experience. Mine sounds like a diesel a lot but that's due to the cam and head, since it was rebuilt before I put in in.
