My old 3.0 was getting 9-11 mpg fully stock.

With 4.10s on 31"s, I was about 13-14 mpg.  I'm about the same with 4.88s and 35"s.

Damn, that sucks... I thought there was something wrong with my truck. I guess the 22RE is better a fuel. I may have to swap one in.

:psss: he asked for 3.0, not 22r

I get between 15 and 20, depending on where I'm at, and the way I'm driving.  averaging out freeway and city, I'd say about 17

whats 3.0 6 cyl?

It is a toyota 6 cylinder motor that came out in the 80's (88 I believe)  in the 4runners, and they began putting them in the pickups in 89.  I beleive toyota stopped using them in '95.  They are a low rated motor, I don't think anyone really cares for them.  They're underpowered, allergic to headgaskets, and are heavy as all get out.  However, they can be reliable when cared for.  I've gone through 2 in the last two years, and am on my third right now.

Is there anything that is simple that I can do to make my MPG a little better? I think that my timing is off a tiny bit, I wonder if that would mess it up badly?
I don't really want to put money into the motor because it is junk and has 300,000 km on it.

I don't know what you're emissions restrictions are like up there, but the first thing you can do is run headers.  The 3.0 comes from the factory breathing like a 30 year smoker, so if you open up the airways, it'll aspirate a lot better.  Headers may be kind of expensive for you, i guess the best tricks would be K&N airfilter, new plugs and wires (good stuff) and a light right foot.  As for timing, you're on your own.  I've had three different 3.0s, and they all ran their best at different timing settings :dunno:

We don't have emission up here, other than we need a cat on 95 and newer vehicle I think. I was thinking of the k&n, I noticed the truck seems to have no power either so you have to keep into the pedal a little more.

I also cut off the thing that runs from the exhaust manifold to the intake, I can't remember its name... would that make any difference?

I just got 17 on my last tank, but half of that was Highway driving back from Moab.

I have a K&N and it helps a lot with throttle response for me.  I couldn't tell much on the gas mileage end, though.

Headers are probably your best bet for more power and mileage.

The EGR valve? :headscratch:  I'd think it would, but I would think you'd have to block the holes, to keep from having vacuum issues, but I dunno.  I have to have it in CA, so I haven't even messed with it.  Don't know anything about it hardly

I think a K&N Filter will be my next buy for the truck then because I did notice that the throttle response is very crappy.
Yea, thats right Blackdog... its the EGR. I cut it off because it cost almost $400 CAD to replace it and I didn't have that kind of money. The only problem I find with it now is that it doesn't have anything to heat the intake in the mornings and the throttle sticks, but once you open the throttle there is no problems anymore until it gets cold again.

Oh yea, and that stupid clutch fan... I have to replace that with a electric one. What is the best one to go with? A Ford Taurus dual? and how do you hook it up so it comes on automatically?

My '90 3.0 with 315K miles gets about 20-22 mpg depending on how I drive.  No lift, 35's & 4.56 gears
