Im planning on running dual cases in my 86 sas 4runner and i have a w-56 with top shift case in it already and i have an opportunity to buy a forward shift t-case... can i use the forward shift case for my new crawl box?  does it require more modification than a top shift case?  is it overly hard or expensive to use it?

Thanks,
Andy

"Later, I learned that even though I engage 4WD my hubs are not automatically locking? Something about manual locking hubs I think. What's manual mean? I need to read a manual to lock them? lol  So I found these neat autolocking hubs and installed them. Sometimes they dont stay locked while I am backing up, but that's fine because I dont have a backup camera to see where Im going (like our RV) so I just simply dont ever back up"- BigMike

i would find another top shift,  the forward shift would HAVE to be converted to top shift to work

although you'd have to take it apart anyway :dunno:

I thought you could use a forward shift for your front box and top shift for the rear box?

his tranny is a topshift style tranny,  so he needs to convert the forward shift to top shift  while he has it apart , NBD  cause he has to take it apart anyway

I'm stoopid.. whats the visual difference between the two... is it obvious that its forward shift. i have an extra tcase from an 82 is that top shift, it looks top shift to me...
I'd like to quit thinking of the present as some minor insignificant preamble to something else~~~~~

the top shift has a shifter coming out the top

the forward shift has shift ing rails/rods  that go into the tranny housing and shifts thru the tranny

so is it worth it for me to buy the forward shift case for $100 and then buy the $80 topshift conversion kit?

I would say no, it's cheaper/easier to buy a top shift and use that, but it depends whats available to you. Some junk yards have been stripped so well that a top shift t-case can be hard to find. Look in the buy/sell section on this board and others, you may be able to find one closer.

82 is a top shift, that's what I got for my crawl box, and an 85 top shift behind it.

A forward shift can be used as long as the tranny is forward shift as well. If that is the case, the forward shift t-case HAS to be the donor case for the crawl box. A top shift must be used in the rear case.
