maaco paint job?

if it's free, go for it! What do you have to lose? I would rattle can it and use the extra $750 bucks for something else. but that's just me

If I had to have it better than a rattle can then yes. I would even if it wasn't free. Just because they can do a cheap ass paint job doesn't mean they can't do nice work.

I have seen quite a few cars painted by them and actually owned one for about a week.  The one I owned looked really good.  It was white and the paint was about a year old but it did have some runs.  Don't count on them doing the best body work at all or the best masking job because they suck at that but your car will be shiny after.  I'm thinkin of getting my truck painted by them when I get back from the hammers.  Hopefully they can paint dents good

i'm putting on brand new fenders and taking out the windshield. Um.. and the bed will not be on for more than another year... i've already put bedliner inside. what else should i do before turning it over to these guys?

You could prep it yourself that way you mask off everything you don't want painted.

around here the $100 and the $800 paint jobs are the same paint job.  this is with the cheapo places.

hell yeah I'd let them paint it.  PAINT IS JUST ROCK LUBE... might as well try a new flavor if it's free

As with ANY paint job, it's all in the details.  Places like MAACO won't take the time to remove bumpers/lights etc, but simply mask around them poorly.  If you can, take the time to remove all the lights, the grille, the bumpers, wiper arms, windshield, side window runs, rear glass, etc...  Basically ANYTHING that has paint around or under it from the factory.  You'll end up with a much nicer job, and won't have tape lines all over everything.

It'll never look like a high-end paint job, but you can make a middle-of-the-road MAACO job look 10x better with a little work yourself.

Ryan basically said what I was gonna say!  Prep work is key to a good job, so any places you want to look good get em prepped yourself first.  We have all our company rigs painted there and they do a good paint job, but the prep work sucks.  Thing is, it depends on the guy with the gun.  Ours seem to be pretty good, but it's hard to say at your local maaco.  You should ask to see some finish products first.

A buddy of mine had a car done by MAACO.  But he did all the prep work himself, and he had it all masked off, and stipped down before he got in there.  So all they had to do was wipe it all down and shoot it!  If I remember right he had paid for the president's ? package which was to have all the runs buffed out and to have extra clearcoats put on.  That was back in 1990 I believe and I still see the car running around today, and it still looks decent!

I did one Paint job there on a 89 s10 Blazer . Insurance paid 800 and I added 300 to get a good paint job. I sanded and scuffed whole truck first, used wax remover from napa . Paid extra to get the hood Jamb and door jambs . Well the painter just painted heavy at the crack of the hood  = 100 runs or so in the hood jambs  and a bad refinish on a run in the windshield posts . When they told me my truck was done I went and looked at it . I opened the hood and ended up with red fingers.   The paint was still wet .  It was shiny but chips easily and then spreads when wet.  My 2 cents

I had my 4runner painted at Maaco. dumbest thing Iv'e ever done. I did all the prep work myself and dropped the truck off for one of thier $700 jobs.
here's the laundry list of things that went wrong:

painted rear view mirrors when explicitly told not to
painted left door handle but not right one
got overspary EVERYWHERE.
loosened the hood to prop it up and apint it, but didn't tighten it back down: almost lost it on the highway.
got a drip on the c-pillar, then claimed it was there when they got it, thus my fault.
there's a line in the passenger side door when the painter slipped the wet paint with the gun
there's fingerprints over the driverside front wheel arch where they didn't wipe the truck down
I swear they must have rolled it right off the street into the paint booth. they DO NOT CARE about any quality of work.
and my favorite screw-up is that they got the color wrong. it was supposed to be blue grey, but it's got an odd tinge to it that's not right.

I took the car back and screamed at the guy, and he actually said to me, "what do you expect for $700?"

fine, now I know what to expect for $700.

my goal is to cost them 100 times that in lost sales from my experience.

it was the pinebrook, nj shop. what makes it even more deplorable is that the pinebrook shop is the regional claims shop is where  you get sent if you have any quality or warranty issues with another shop in the region. you then have to daw a straight line diagram and assume that they therefore must suck LESS than the other shops.

Id say take the 700 bucks and buy an air compressor and a decent paint gun. Cheap paint jobs for life!

  I agree with you for once!  If you do a single stage job (like maaco, don't get duped by the "clear coat in the paint" crap, that's a total lie) then it's harder to get a drip free job, but if you go 2 stage then it should be much easier to do a nice job.  You can get some house of kolors paint on ebay for a decent price....and por 15 too!
