ifs wheel bearings
« on: Apr 10, 2006, 11:54:41 AM »
i was driving on the freeway yesterday and my driver side front wheel started making a sound like the tire was rubbing on something. So i stopped and checked and nothing was rubbing but my wheel was loose when i pulled it side to side (not the lugs nuts i checked). Now i have the whole front end apart since i figured it was the wheel bearings. But both of them look fine :dunno:.   BUT when i was taking everything apart the 2 lock nuts were only finger tight so i took them off without a wrench. I'm guessing there not supposed to be that loose and thats why my wheel felt loose and why my tire feels like its rubbing on something?

You're right, those AREN'T supposed to be finger tight. That will definetly cause some bad things to happen.
I don't remember the exact specs, I usually tighten them till the rotor is hard to turn, then back it off a quarter turn. If they're too tight, they'll get hot, if they're too loose.....well, you know.
After you put it back togeather, with the wheel on, grab the top and bottom of the tire and try and rock it. If you've tightened everything up and it still wobbles then you've probably got bad bearings.
