Ohms rating for fuel tank in 71 FJ40
« on: Mar 09, 2006, 11:50:58 PM »
Im replacing my stock cluster with individual guages on my 40. Anybody know off hand what the ohms rating is for the fuel tank sending unit on a 71 FJ40 at FULL and EMPTY. Besides matching ohms and diameter, what else should I look for? Im looking at Autometer Ultra lites. :headscratch:

When I did it years ago I couldn't find a gauge to match so I took a sender from a VW bug elongated the holes in the mounting plate and never thought about it again.  The sender is easily tweaked to work in the cruiser tank and you can get gauges for a bug all day long.  Take you old sender to Seabring West and compare it to a late 60 VW sender.

I ended up getting a 16 gallon fuel cell from Summit with a GM 90 ohm sending unit. I matched this up to a 90 ohm Autometer fuel gauge to match the rest of the cluster. Im planning to retain the use of the stock tank under the passenger seat as my reserve tank. I plan to use an electric fuel pump to send fuel from the stocker to the fuel cell with a momentary switch. The sending unit in the fuel cell will tell me when im topped off.
