Your favorite type of welding?
« on: Mar 07, 2006, 05:04:39 PM »
Who here has a favorite type of welding and what for?

For small repairs and stuff like that, an oxy acedylene torch works, and it is fun to watch actual flame melt metal and form...

I am learning to MIG weld now, so I can't tell you if I like it or not seems to be a good way to go.

Never used a TIG welder either, I hope to learn soon enough.

Also what is your favorite brand or welder?

Mig is the easiest for me by far.  Arc is ok, but i suck at angles.  Gas welding just plain sucks all together.  I have never done tig so i don't know much about that.  I like welding with the Miller 220.  It is powerfull and it seams to work a lot better then the miller 135 or lincoln 125 that i have used before.

I'm actually a fan of arc :dunno:  I'm also decent with mig, but I need more practice.  I suck at tig, never got the opportunity to try oxy

Acedyline torch has a pretty steep learning curve, it likes to burn through the metal if you go to slow, and getting the filler material around was right. A good a good cheater way to use oxy is to lay down the metal on bricks or the surface you weld on and lay 2 rods down where you want to go and melt it and move that puddle left to right, or right to left, depending how you weld (left handed or right). I havent done that, but my buddy told me about it, the only downside is you cant do that while welding something above you.

Well, considering I've never had the pleasure of said tungsten inert gas, my current favorite is mig.  I got my start with arc, and it worked well enough, but I do dig the mig.

I like welding with good penetration that holds up to long term abuse...process is optional.   :disturbed:

I have taught a few guys to weld by handing them a hot glue gun and telling them. "make a bead look like a stack of dimes and then we will start burnin steel". most of them picked it right up after that. just a way to get them to be smooth and to slow down a bit.

I like TIG best, Oxy is cool but takes lots of practice and I don't do it enough to be good. Mig is just my real hot glue gun for steel. the arc has sat untouched in the shed since the power mig 255 showed up but nothing better for field welding on plow shares and equipment.

I really like my 220 red box arc. i even welded my muffler on with it. mig is fun too but i'm saving my duckets for an tig.

I like Arc the best, though I can weld with any of the afore mentioned processes(MIG, TIG, OXY, Arc, etc)
TIG, I think, is the most fun to use.

Im good at Arc (did it for 5 years doing fab work)  im still fairly new to mig... havn't even touched tig yet.. Havn't layed down a strength bead on the rig yet with mig.. when i built it I mainly used arc with 5P and some 7018 over it...

only mig i've really done is my half doors which doesnt need to hold any kind of strength.. it wasn't easy on 18 gauge.

my favorite is by far tig on stainless and mild steel i like aluminum if i am not being rushed but its still kinda a pain to me, i like mig good all around welder the spool gun makes welding aluminum alot less time consuming than tig welding it and oxy and arc are about even i used to be realy good at oxy and arc but havent used eather in a wile
for arc and mig i prefer lincoln machines and on tig i prefer millers

for thin metal such as body panels i like using a mig. if it needs to have strength, i use an ark (i've got a lincoln crackerbox with a 250 volt plug, cant remember its name).

We use carbon dioxide at work for ours migs.  We use argon for Aluminum and tig.  some different mixtures for spray and stainless.  basic mig is pretty cool.  for thick stuff i like the .045 outershield with carbon dioxide.  the weld turns out pretty good and has a lot of penetration.  you just have to break off the slag cover.  we don't run arc at work and i haven't arc welded in over a year.  not a fan of it.   i have tig'd once and it takes some getting use too.

the most common gas used on mild steel with mig is 75% argon and 25% co2 alot of manufacturing shops use strait co2 because its alittle cheaper but the 75/25 runs a little cleaner some people also use a 95/5 becouse it burns a little hotter but its more expensive and not all welding shops stock it

I do a lot of welding on road construction equipment at work, and for me arc is more relaxing, I can just zone out while I'm welding.
Even though I like arc more, for speed I use the pulsed mig setting on our Lincoln Power-mig 350mp's with 90%Argon, 10% CO2 and .045 solid core ER70s-3. It's fast, penetrates awesome, no splatter and there is no clean-up when you are done. And there is no messing with voltage/amperage on the pulse setting, just wire speed, and the welder chooses the best v/a for the wire speed and wire size being used. You can just crank it up and if its too hot you just move faster.
I also do quite a bit of hard-facing at work too with arc and wire-feed. If I had to choose any type of welding to do for a living, it would be hard-facing, it's just fun to do. You have to look at previous wear patterns, and figure out what types of welding patterns will prevent wear on the parent metal.

I've done all 4, and I find MIG so much easier and cleaner!

Torch welding is too light for anything that I've needed to weld, so I don't make a habit of it unless I really have to use it.

TIG-I suck at it, plain and simple.

MIG-I love it

ARC-I am pretty good at it, but it's so much messier than the MIG so if I have a choice I go with the MIG, second choice is the ARC.
