Taco axle width, backspacing total
« on: Mar 05, 2006, 09:20:15 PM »
i was wondering what width axles i would need to run 38x14.5's on my 99 tacoma  with my curent 8x16  4 inch bs wheels  :headscratch:

im asking this in more as referance to clearing things when turning the wheels and/or stuffing them   i plan to radius the wheel wells to the tires also
'99 SR5/TRD Tacoma w/5vzfe. SAS'd with 64" diamond axle (w/ long superset & ARB). about 5" of lift, 305/75 x16 BFG KM1's. Soon to come: 1.5" more lift (6.5"), 35 to 37" tire, undecided at this point., 63" F/F diamond rear, Marlin 4.7 tacobox.

No. its fine.. im running my 16" wide tires on a 7" wide rim and have no problems..  a 14.5" wide tire is just fine  and it will also hold the bead better.

im definately not saying it cant be done, usually you want to try and stay within 4" eitehr way, but even when i worked as a tire tech, we mounted 33x12.5s on a stock toyota rim, it was a 15x6... a little bit odd but not that bad.....

for that big a tire, a full width would probably be the best, that would help out especially with the lift needed to clear a tire that big unless major fender trimming is planned on

running a skinnier rim  helps keep the tire thinner  which will help keep the rubbing down.. wider rim makes the tire wider  which means more scrub radius and whatnot when turning.. which will turn the tire into the fender more.  which you should have known as a "tire tech"  :shake:

the point i was making was it will fit and is possible, yes it will hold a bead better yes it will tuck the tires in more than a wider rim... was jsut saying its a good sized tire and 4" backspacing is quite a lot with that combination, full width axles would probably suit that combination the best, will others work, sure, will it be most ideal, well that depends on everyons individual ideas and vehicle goals, and in what mods they are willing to make to get it to work

FWIW you should look to run 3"backspace rim so that you clear everything.... if not more
