steering arm cone washer taper?
« on: Feb 23, 2006, 03:54:01 PM »
Does anybody know the taper for the cone washers in a stock SA steering arm?
How about where I can find a reamer to replicate it?
TIA

From what I've measured, the angle is ~34.65*. Therefore the taper is ~17.325*. This is from measuring one of them with calipers, so not exact but really close.

To clarify, here is a drawing of the cone holes in the arms that I'm making.
Hope this helps.

beautiful!  Thanks!
how are you planning to cut it?  turn down a drill bit?

hope you're not asking me!  MSPaint is the closest I come to CAD software.  All the dimensions I have came from the azrockcrawler.com site.
But if someone has dimensions for the "kingpin" at the bottom of the arms I'd like to see them (not that it should be difficult to measure).
Also since we're on the topic, does this piece carry any load or can I safely assume that it's primary purpose is to locate the trunion bearings, and could it be bolted to the bottom of an arm with a 1/2" (or smaller) bolt?  It seems that during hard steering the studs should carry all the shearing forces.

they mainly set preload aswell as locate.. but i believe  they do share some shearing forces since its machined to slide into the hole in the top of the knuckle..  quite an important part.

So maybe recessing them 1/4" or so into the arm with a press fit would be better...
couldn't hurt to take some stress off the studs

Here are the dimensions for the cylinder press fitted into the arms.
I am going to use a press fit for this.
And yes this cylinder does carry some of the shear forces.
Hope this helps.

thanks, seems odd that they would use 1.5" dia doesn't it?

Why? Do you mean because it's an import, and it seems to be standard measurements rather than metric?
For the cylinder I didn't want to take my measurements off of a 20 year old arm, so I borrowed a new marlin arm from a friend and thats where I got these numbers.
I took my measurements in inches but they could be round numbers in metric too.

Inches                 Metric(mm)
1.500                   38.10
1.496                   38.00
0.667                   16.96
0.669                   17.00

Therefore the cylinder could very likely have the true diameters of 17mm and 38mm.
