Idiot Lights?
« on: Feb 23, 2006, 08:24:43 AM »
I tried a search and nothing came up, so here it goes.

I was driving home from the supermarket last night after dark, and noticed that under acceleration in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, the Charge and Brake idiot lights would come on.  As soon as I let off the throttle to shift they would go off.  This is the first time I have ever noticed this and was wondering what may cause this to happen.  I really wish I had SR5 gauges so I knew more about what is going on, but that is in the near future.  Please look at my sig for truck specs, and thanks in advance for any help that y'all can give.  I am clueless here.

Usually when both lights come on, that indicates a alternator problem.   Does the warning lights come on when the headlights and heater are turned on?

any chance you put on an aftermarket alternator?  the same thing happened to me, the alternator went out and i tried to save a few bucks and bought an aftermarket one.  turns out that very few aftermarket alts meet toyota requirements.  saved up and bought one from toyota, dont remember how much, but problem was solved.

The headlights were on when I noticed it, but it is harder to tell in the daytime.  I will have to check on the way home from work today to see if it still happens w/o headlights.  No aftermarket alternator here, 100% stock.  Do you think replacing just the brushes would help?

brushes would be a cheap thing to try.  You would have to dig in and see what they look like.  While your in there, clean a polish the communtator( Copper the brushes ride on).  600 or 100 grit sandpaper work well.

IF THE IDIOT LIGHT COMES ON UNDER ACCELERATION THEN ITS PROBABLY THE VOLTAGE REGULATOR   AND IS ALLOWING TO MUCH VOLTAGE TO THE BATTERY
