tranny shifters
« on: Feb 13, 2006, 03:02:25 PM »
Hi all, I am new here but not new to Toyotas.  Had a 1 gen, got a 2 gen, had a 3 gen, and a 4 gen.  My question is this.  I am replacing the tranny out of my '84 (g52?) with a g56.  The g56 didn't come with shifters so I am using the ones out of my current trans. Problem is the trans shifter wont fit down over the pins in the g56.  Can I just cut/grind the pins down and get it to work or do I need to get a whole new shifter?  The transfer case one swapped over fine from the foreward shift to the top shift.  (That's what I thought I'd be having probs with.)

Well. I got out my dremel tool and ground down the pins a bit and the shifter now works great.  I don't have the top of the shifter plate so I don't know if the shifter will fit since it has the cap that pushes down and twists to hold the shifter in place.  I could probably make something, but I kinda need to know what it looks like.  Anyone out there wanna take a pic with the shifter boots off?  Thanks Peter

Still can't get this thing to work.  Thinking i'm going to have to go get a new shifter at the dealer.  Not even junk yards around here have toyota parts!

I already shaved the pins down on the lower part of the base plate to get the shifter to fit, but the cup wont fit in the base to hold it in. (It does shift the trans though.)   I am trying to do the same thing you are 89toy.  I figure if I had the top piece of the base plate, (i think this is the shifter retainer) I could just cut off the cup and spring or just part of the spring to hold the shifter down.

you can try here for a shifter i dont think it will work the cups that hold the shifters in are a lot different in size.
