The only major problem is with the PMD, and here is the cure for that.
http://heathdiesel.com/T/Chevy-GM/Chevy-9601/PMD-Isolators/
I talked to the guys at Heath Diesel, and they said the 6.5 is a good motor, the only problems is with some of the electronics.
I have checked into the 4bt cummins, and it is heavier, and harder to fit, and louder.
ok why a 6.5??? take it from some one who works with those motors day to day(USMC Motor transport mechanic) and i wouldn't use one of those motors if it was given to me! if your gunna do a diesel and are goin to go with a mechanical go with a cummins. my DD is a 2002 Chevy 2500HD with the Duramax and it is a great motor but they are a little exspensive to get ahold of. but anyways i like your axel decision. just think about a different diesel motor

yes it is a heavier motor but they are easier to get power out of than the 6.5, plus there is more of an aftermarket for the 4bt. but hey its your rig

I think what ever you do is worth it as long as you like it.  Afterall you don't want to be just like me.  Or him, or her, or them.  It really does not matter what newer diesel motor you use, they all will have plenty of power for a Toyota.
And which ever one you use will out last you truck as well.

This 3/4 truck spun the tires real easy on the street, And heath diesel said with some of there upgrades to the 6.5turbo, it can run with the stock Duramax.
The 6.5 is made by detroit diesel.
When I get my FJ40 done, I will have to run it with someone that has a 4bt. :driving:

And then BOOM! game over
I've never seen a 6.5 worth taking out.
The 4bt is neat, but limited on rpm.  Heard rumors of cranked up ones,  500lbs of torque, but only like 140 horse.  Probably redlines at 2200?  They are pigs in the weight department also

That is gonna be the heaviest FJ40 ever! I like it. Whenever a FJ40 sounds like a pot of bubbling toxic waste it is good in my opinion.

I`ve been talking to alot of 6.2 and 6.5 owners that have had them for years, and they seem to really like them.
An old friend of mine, his brother inlaw, had 350,000 miles on his 6.2, and only replaced starters, and alternators, minor stuff.
I did here if you are pulling heavy loads, and you are runnning it real hard, pulling like 10-15000 lbs. and really loading the engine up, then they can blow a cylinder or 2 :gap: .
But I won`t be pulling anything.
Thanks, for the input.

Its not going to be much heavier than any other FJ40 with a V8 and one ton running gear.
The 6.2 and 6.5 weight and size are between a 350 and 454.
Thanks guys for all the input, keep it coming, gets everone and me thinking of everything that I need to for this conversion.

I am all for the one ton heavy metal running gear but what is the advantage of a 6.5 over a 350? I have never heard anybody say anything good about a GM diesel before the Duramax exept how the 6.2 sounds with a straight pipe (which is also questionable). The most negative talk I hear about those motors comes from the fleet mechanics that work on them. One guy in my club has a 6.5 equipped dually and gets outpulled by guys with gas motors. True, it may not weigh that much more but you will actually have some performance with the gas motor not to mention the most heavily supported aftermarket parts supply in history. The only merit I can see is the luggability of the diesel for crawling. How simple is it to hook up a 6.5? Is there much support hardware you will need to run it like a intercooler or anything? Whatever you decide to do I am excited to see the photos. From my experience the people who love the 6.2 are the die hard chevy guys that would tell you their fullsize chevy truck is the best ever period, even if it had an Iron Duke 4 cylinder in it. Well maybe those guys are just isolated to the population of MN farm boys.
If you still have control you aren't going fast enough

i don't now about that health diesle keepin up with a Duramax. my Duramax has 380hp and 800ft.flbs. at the wheels. thanks to www.Fastspecialties.com but the good news with the 6.5turbo is you will have a fairly simple install. and you wont need to run a intercooler
