Here is a different idea that I was thinking about for my 4 Runner. The tire carrier swings down:

Thats pretty sweet,im thinking of fold down too. Weld up some brackets on the bumper as hinges, but i need to figure out how to latch it. Thanks for the pic. Anyone have one on a 1st gen runner I can look at? :turtle:

for the actual tire mount go to the junk yard and find an old yota rear axle and tear all the break crap off and then cut the shaft shorter and then just weld that to the holder and use two lug nuts to hold the tire on

The only problem that I can forsee with the "swing down" carrier is lifting the heavy tire up and down every time you want to access the tailgate.

Dunno  if you have a cage, but what about a swing up?  you could use some hydraulic rams like on minivans and such to hold it up :dunno:  kinda like the spare tire being the back hatch of a minivan??
