how big of a tire will i be able to turn with a stock 22re with 5.29's and lockers? i want to run 38's is that possible? this truck will no longer be driven on the road only on the trail so top speed isn't an issue.

With 5:29's and 38's you be a little high on the gearing over stock usually 35's or 36's max to equal stock gearing.

I think 52's would be the limit for the motor in 4LO
38-40's limit for the front axle.

whats stock gearing though... i have 3.90's right now and 34's haha=no clutch, so is it possible to run 38's with 5.29? will that be about the same as running 4.10's and 33's?

52's?

does my motor have enough power to turn 38,12.5,15? or possible 14.5?

You will be close to stock with 38's it will be more like running 33's with 4.10's like you said. The only issue would be that 5.29's have a small and weaker pinion which if you hammer it with 38's you are asking for broken teeth.

i figured i might have that problem with the weaker pinion, but i wouldn't think my motor would break a ring i wouldn't think it has enough power. i am not gunna run boggers i was thinking of getting sx's could i run 14.5's or 12.5?

firstly ive seen 42" tsls ran on 5.71 gears with no breakage   5.29s are not as weak as everyone says they are..  you have no idea the things ive done to 5.29 gears with 40" boggers.  5.29s are plenty to run 38's.  im running 5.13 gears ( chevy axles) in my toyota and 38s and have no problems with power..  you will be just fine

I am the optimist  ::)

I have never known anyone with 5.29's to break them either, I always say it so if someone is unaware why they are somewhat weaker that they'll know. Well I take that back I think bentyota runs 5.29's and he broke his pinion when we were in Moab last spring. He runs like 36's.

Spools are cheap but Lincoln Lockers are even cheaper and you achieve the same results.

Never broke the one I had in my 84 truck,  and it cost very little to do. Somewhere on this board there is a thread discussing how to do it right.

eh thats not really the best way since your not getting as much weld on the gears are you should.. basicly fill the valleys  in the gears and you basicly turn the gears into a big ball of weld.. i'll get some pics of mine tomarrow when i take my rear cover off to change my gear oil.

I am going to be running 38 TSL's with my 5.29's The undergearing will be about the same as my 33's and 4.10's. I dont use 5th gear very much but oh well. You should be fine. Just dont run that big of tires with a locked front and stock birfs. Breakage.

if i weld just on the teeth (the ends) it seams like i wouldn't have as much strength less surface area welded? got any pics?
