Help me get my pitman arm off!
« on: Jan 17, 2006, 08:24:11 PM »
Ok, so I've got a stubborn one...
I've soaked it for a week in PB blaster, tried using a 3 prong puller with a breaker bar and with an impact to no avail.
I'm getting really close to breaking out the cutting wheel. :help:

no doubt.. just beat the flop out of it with a hammer. first beat all around it to kind of break the rust up and then just smack the :pokinit: out of it.. works every time unless the splines are twisted :)

Thought about the torch, but I didn't want to fry the seals.
I like the hammer idea! :_order:  :gap:

I tried heating mine up and hammering the piss out of it.  Didn't work.  We bent a puller from Reibes.  Ended up taking it to Reibes and have them pull it off.  They broke 2 of there pullers but finally got it off.

It's a good idea though, just pull it off your truck and let someone else break their tools to remove it. :hammerhead:

Go rent a pitman arm puller @ autozone or kragen.  The trick is to tighten the bolt on the puller down and then smack the bolt with a hammer a few times.  Should come right off.  Doing this, I have never had any arm that couldn't be taken off!

Right on, I'll try anything.
I've got to check tomorrow if our mechanics have a hydraulic puller.
Thanks for the ideas!

If I can't get this off, I don't deserve to drive my truck! :shake_head:

I agree the best way is to use a puller, apply some tension to it with the bolt, then tap around it with a hammer and you will be in good shape

Kragen charges $5 to rent tools, Autozone is free (pay for tool, %100 refund when returned) Tighten the puller, smack the end of the puller that you put the ratchet on, tighten, smack, repeat until it pops. I've had them take 2 cycles and I've had them take 7 cycles. Always works, just depends on age and condition of the box.

goodluck  I've broken 2 pullers that looked like this.  both of the came from kragen's rental program (they did take both back, and refunded my deposit though) and then I got one from pep boys, and that one got it off.  the pullers that I used from kragen were the brand that they sell, powerbuilt or something like that.  Just something to keep in mind :dunno:

For what it's worth, i got the pic of the puller off the net somewhere.  Truth is, mine is not that exact one, but a Harbor Freight knockoff (Made in Taiwan) that I have been using for 3 years now.  It hasn't broke or bent yet.

Lucky you, I needed a 60 ton press at a local shop to get the bstrd off.
