Reprogramming a MetroPCS phone

what the title says... i know it can be done, but how?

my metro phone is broken and a friend of mine jsut upgraded his and is going to give me his old phone....

i know his bill is paid for and current and the phone isnt stolen or anything of that nature....

so how do i reprogram it?
