I have found a truck on Craigslist locally. http://seattle.craigslist.org/car/119599487.html Now the question is do you think this is worth the 1300 dollar asking price? I emailed him and asked for pictures, so I will add those to this thread when I get them. Let me know what you think. I am not 100% sure what he means by rear wheel cylander, do you know what hes talking about?

rear wheel cylinder is the lil piston thingy that makes your drum brakes push the shoes into the drum....
doesnt sound like too bad a deal..... offer $1k and you might jsut get it @ that, but $1300 isnt too outrageously priced, at least down here anyways......

a rear wheel cylinder is $20-30 @ kragens and it would be wise to replace both of them....

A rear wheel cyl. usually means a rear brake job, because the linings are oil soaked. I'm curious about the frame repair too. doesn't sound good. I bought a fairly clean '81 4x4 for $1000 and this truck sounds much worse off than mine. I'd offer $800 and go from there.

wa,   i know your fed up with the 81  but  really  man  that 1st gen  is so sweet, i really think you would be happier if you finish it,  not only will it be a 1st gen but it will be something you respect alot more, and dont spend money on a bucket of rust with a bad tranny and questionable motor

your 81  is 1st class,  all you need is welding the bed up  and replacing the motor,  just build your 22 R  if your not going into the high country you dont need efi

a 110 stick welder and some 1/16th  6013 rods  are all you need to weld those body panels,  just keep your amps low like 70 and take your time

Dude,I wouldn't even bother. This statment right here says it all "Yeah it needs work, but parts are cheap for these trucks, I've checked but have no time to invest. "  What he really meant to say was :Yeah i've checked and parts are ridicuolus for these things and since people think these trucks are gold I'm just gonna sell it and make some money from some gullible kid"

I am gonna carfax it because of the obvious reasons but this guy lives in Kent/East hill. In that area a crime ring was busted last year for stealing 80's toyota trucks, they stole a ton of them and I suspect this to be one of them. Look at the non-matching slider, outsides are tinted, insides are not.

Some people just tint the outsides and leave inside clear for visibility or maybe the slider got broke.  I  dont think its stolen and I do think bubbas right, I wouldnt bother.  Too much work to do, future tranny probs, rusty frame... I passed up a lot of trucks and looked for about 6 months before I found "the One".

I might drive over there next weekend and will be sure to bring my camera. I'm not sure yet, I have yet to see a picture of the frame or whatever. I will ask for a few more pictures. Some of my money problems were solved bececause of x-mas, dont you love grandparents? I am going to ask in an email about the frame in more depth and stuff.

Around here he could prolly get $1200 for it easy

wa4x4

I'm gonna go over this week or this weekend and have a little look-see. I will offer him 1k, but I think I will end up paying 1300 or 1200 for it IF I buy it.

Oh apparently that is not the original bed. Learned that from a guy in WA. Apparently American 4wd models had no bed rails. American 2wd's did and Canadian 4wd's did. Dont quote me, maybe it was a feature but most likely that isnt the original bed. I have heard check under that silly bedliner for rust and the crossmember under the bed for rust as those are the worst places? Does anyone have any suggestions on what to look for. I am looking for fluid leakes, any oil in the rim (needing rebuilt knuckle), fluid leaking from diffs, rust on the frame and....?

No matter what I pay for it, I would be happy to have a truck right now that is in good shape. Sick of paying 40 bucks to go get my atv out of the shop..a small 4cyl will haul that thing around much more effeciantly than the 460 V8.

well if you look just behind the ignition switch it looks broken but need a closer pic to tell for sure. and if he will not send a close - up that means it was stolen at one time or another or it's just broken.

dude, just build the 1st gen.  With the $$ you'd spend on this truck, you could probably get someone to wire in the EFI for you, especially if you drop in the motor yourself.  I gurantee you'll regret gettin rid of the 1st gen, I almost sold my truck because I was tired of working on it, but I'm sooo glad I didn't.  And it still don't run!!  If you're not wanting to work on stuff, you may be in the wrong hobby   If you start selling stuff everytime something goes bad, you're gonna lose a lot of $$, and you won't learn.  I didn't know jack about engines, other than tearing down a 350 in auto shop beofre htis year.  Now I've done heads twice, and done 2 engine swaps :dunno:  I've learned soo much, that I never would have if I just gave up.

Oh yeah, rust is repairable

Just checked out the ad, I would think twice.  Frame rust=bad, sometimes can be hard to repair, body damage, needs a lot of parts replaced, etc.

If you are stuck on this truck, I wouldn't pay more than a grand for it :nope:

I was thinking about this. The money issue keeps coming up, I know trucks are expensive and all but I have to replace just about everythign in this truck just to get it ready for the street.

22re W56 and T-case  $850-1,000
Knuckle rebuild $175
Repair/replace frame $???
Replace ALL lights  $150-175
Rear brakes $???
Doors $150-200
Bumpers $ 500-600 to buy, 200-300 to pay someone to make it
Wiring harness $200-400
Someone to wire it (I would mess it up) $???
Exhaust $150-250

That comes out to $3650. Plus my purchase price of 350, the whole truck, fully stock and finished would cost 4000.

This truck:

Rewire headlight switch $10?
Replace brakes $300-400
Front bumper $ 300
Knuckle rebuild $175

$785, Plus the 1,000-1,300 to buy it, comes out to $1,785-2,085. Then I could actually build it. Plus guys, I have never carried the flame for the first gens like you have, I like the clean, sterile look of the square bodies, square headlights, it's just a good look.
