Front end rebuild
« on: Dec 17, 2005, 05:52:32 PM »
Having some trouble with the front end of an 87 4Runner with an 85 front end. Decided to put in Longfields and went with the full rebuild kit from Marlin (with bearings). Good thing...I found one of the bearings that rotates the knuckle around the housing (the top one) was in pieces. Got everything back together. Ran great in 2wd, but as soon as I put the hubs in I got this awful noise. Narrowed it down to the driver side hub.  Tore everything back apart and found that the dust seal on the back of the rotor had been eaten alive (the brass one with the rubber liner).  The seal was $36  :o  at Toyota so I really don't want to mess up another one.

I can't figure what I did wrong.  I've done this before and didn't have trouble.

Why did it work in 2wd, but not 4wd?  Did putting in the hubs cause something to bind up?   Is this all connected to the dead bearing I found when I started?  Something bent?  If so, what and how do I check?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks!

It's the brass looking guys with the rubber on the inside.  They're in the upper left hand corner of the picture. Pretty much ate the rubber right off of them.

   those bolt on over the spindle to keep mud from coming in from under the dust shield,   i cant see it eating the rubber unless a bolt came out of your rotor to hub :dunno:

is there some sort of bur on the backside of your hub,  just by   ing  im sure that rubber rides on the back part of the wheel hub behind the rotor,  but bolts to the spindle

Thanks for the exploded view!

I got to thinking about it and I'm wondering if I didn't somehow pinch it when I but the hub back.  I hope it's that simple.  I'll check for burrs too.  Thanks!

I don't think it would cause a noise though.

I haven't had a chance to get back into it.  The parts just came in last night and with the last minute shopping and what not the Runner is just kind of sitting there.  I do have a new theory... Maybe I didn't get the races for the new bearings set all they way in.  That made things off just enough to eat the dust seal and when I put in the hubs maybe the new axle bound up some how causing the noise.

Any thoughts?
