1. Will a v6 3rd fit into a 4cyl housing without clearancing?  what needs to be clearanced if it doesn't?

2. are front and rear 3rds interchangable, or are they different?

yes third members (8'') 79-95 are all interchangable and no u dont have to do any clearancing, i just did a V6 third and a high pinion in my truck :turtle:  :beerchug:
86' yota, extra cab, duals, HP frnt with detroit 4.88s, V6 rear with detroit 4.88s, bobby super set, driveline tech dl's, neat lil upgrades on the way can someone say 4link and dovetail front...

swap away there Blackdog,  i just installed a 4.37 4cyl ring gear on my elocker,

had to make a custom sleeve,  and i need to refit some things befor installation but i think it'll work great

I just put V6 thirds in my 4cyl,  the front and rear went with ease.  The V6 thrids that I found had the 4.88's and  I did no clearancing to fit.  Good luck

i'm gonna put a V6 4.88 3rd member in my front axle.  on test fitting it i found that it wouldn't go in.  i figured out my problem, the flange for the 3rd member is double thick, and while the top layer of the bottom notch was cut out, it was barely cut on the bottom layer.  i took my angle grinder to it and all is well
