new bumber
« on: Nov 27, 2005, 07:38:03 PM »
i just put a 2.5 inch leveling kit, and a 3 inch body lift  on my tacoma, and was wondering what my options are for winch capable bumpers

i dont want the bumber to be 3 inches to low, i was thinking maybe a bumber from marlin and welding some extensions on to it so its 3 inches higher from the frame :shudder:  :shudder:

what do you guys think?
'99 SR5/TRD Tacoma w/5vzfe. SAS'd with 64" diamond axle (w/ long superset & ARB). about 5" of lift, 305/75 x16 BFG KM1's. Soon to come: 1.5" more lift (6.5"), 35 to 37" tire, undecided at this point., 63" F/F diamond rear, Marlin 4.7 tacobox.

Or does anybody know how the ARB bumpers mount?   if they use brackets to bolt up and dont bolt directly to the frame, maybe i can just make some custom brackets in the machine shop at school?

i have an ARB on my 98 4 runner but it looks like the dude just welded it on to the frame. which will be a pain in the ass to get my winch in that thing.

DIY!  find you a local welding shop :phone:,they most likely can sell you steel also, have them bend you up some tubing and notch it all out and weld it yourself or get a buddy to do you a favor.you can save about$200 that way.more money for your next project :twocents: :twocents: :twocents:

I'd contact the dealer from which you want to purchase your bumper from, most of the time they have a custom set up to accommodate the body lifts. I don't think this would be an uncommon question that they all have had to address. I'm not going to hard mount my winch, receivers front and rear with plug ins so I can move it around.

You have Demello Offroad, CBI Offroad, BentUp Offroad, Badland Offroad, Front Range?, these are just a few choices.  Go over to the TTORA boards and do a search and you will find a lot of information.

BTW...with an ARB, the frame needs to be strenthened because when you winch with an ARB, most of the for is being applied to the bolt on the end of the frame horn and causing the end to bow out and tear.  http://wattora.com/mods/endcap/

I can build you a custom bumper, winch-ready, like the one in your pic...mine can also be built as an air tank for if you want on-board air, quite unlike anything Marlin offers (don't wanna steal biz from The King). If you are still interested, call me. This is my ad at www.tradinpost.com... TOYOTA 4x4 BROKEN? Experienced mechanic & fabricator. Rebuilt frames, engines. If you have a IFS vehicle think about your long term plans for your rig (SAS) before you buy a TJM or ARB. You will run into extra work and add expense if you want to use Leaf springs and want to keep that bumper, but if you go with coilovers then no worries.

BTW...with an ARB, the frame needs to be strenthened because when you winch with an ARB, most of the for is being applied to the bolt on the end of the frame horn and causing the end to bow out and tear.  http://wattora.com/mods/endcap/

If you do go the custom route, (better safe than sorry) tell that person that you are planning on doing a SAS conversion using leaf springs and you will be mounting a winch, even if you have no plans to do a SAS at least your front end will be really really strong.
