Toyota CV joint... High angle vs Low angle???
« on: Nov 27, 2005, 07:00:33 AM »
How do I identify a toyota high angle cv and a low angle cv?

What years and what aplications (front/rear) do I look or ask for?

Are there tell tale shapes, dimples, notches, etc. I can look for?

Need to find a couple high angle cv's to use for the rear of a two piece shaft and a spare.

I am unaware of the different types of CV's for Toy's.  If no one responds to your request call Jesse at High Angle Driveline, he has built several shafts for me and has always gone beyond the call of duty.

I know the IFS trucks use a lower angle CV that only bends to about 25 degrees.  As far as I know, all 85 and earlier trucks use a higher angle (35 degree) CV.  The 84 and 85 trucks also use 10mm bolts instead of the 8mm used on earlier ones.

The IFS CV's have two ears on the flange.  Now I don't know if this is true of ALL IFS CV's or not.  There may be an exception to the rule.  Also, the IFS CV's can be clearanced to bend to 35 degrees.  I have never tried it, but I have seen write ups on it.  Seems like a lot of work.

I have a couple front shafts with CV's but they don't fit the bolt patern on the carrier flange.
Anybody know of a bigger diameter carrier flange?

Marlin has some triple drilled flanges that will fit all the different bolt patterns :)

Yep, I have 2 of them.  Very convenient I must say.

I did not know about the different styles in the earlier years.  That is good stuff to know.

Carrier flange is smaller OD than the front driveshaft CV flange, not enough material to try drilling new holes. Also smaller splines than trany or pinion. Already been down and visted with Marlin. He doesn't have a uniflange with the smaller splines.

Bummer.  Well, I guess the wrecking yards are your only hope then.  Good luck

Back to the begining sort-a.
Do any of the newer Taco's, pre-runners, etc. use high angle CV's?

or the smaller diameter flange bolt patern?

I don't know anything about the CVs on the newer trucks.  Sorry.

OK,
here is the newest brain storm (number 6, I think). Dave (at Marlin Crawler) and I came up with this idea.
I need a carrier flange off of a turbo drive shaft. They are bigger diameter. I then should be able to drill out the bolt holes in a v6 front shaft CV and run it for a rear. Should work.

Anybody know where I can find one?
Anybody done a two piece to one piece conversion?

New intel. Don't think the "turbo" plan will work. But we are pretty sure a Taco 4x4, 2.7L x-cab driveline has the flange I need.

Anybody got one of those?

Why are you trying to keep the carrier bearing?  Rip it off and throw a shaft in there.

Long story:
Building a 7s racer and I am not running the front axle in this truck, I pulled all that extra weight out along with the trany. I installed a 2wd R150 trany. But I am not real happy with the "slip yoke" driveline at the trany with all the flex angle of 16" of rear end travel. I feel it would wipe out the bushing at the back of the trany so I beat this by making a 9" long (the difference in length of the transfer case) front half of a 2 piece drive line to run 0 degree angle out of the trany. The CV joint will then do all the work.

OK Taco flange idea a bust. Still have one more slim chance on a part that might work, really doubt it will but hey, keep fingers crossed. :crossed:

Meanwhile need to start looking for a complete V6 Taco rear two piece diveline. Y'all know where I can find one?

Troy should have it. I just picked up a CV shaft and a steering box from him yesterday. Great prices and great service. :)
