BigMike

Hello guys,

Well recently (Nov 2005), I found out how to route all default server messages from the forum to my person email address so that I can review forum errors.

And incidentally, instead of expecting error messages, what I am getting are members who are Replying Directly to their Personal Messages from their own Email Client's Inbox.

Please note that the Emails sent to your Email Address to notify you of a New Personal Message, are ONLY NOTIFICATIONS.

Here is the basic notification email that is sent to your email address when you receive a new pm:

QuoteYou have just been sent a personal message by <Member Name> on Marlin Crawler - Online Forum.

IMPORTANT: Remember, this is just a notification. Please do not reply to this email.

The message they sent you was:

<message here>

Reply to this Personal Message here: <Reply-To Address>

Please follow the instructions, "IMPORTANT: Remember, this is just a notification. Please do not reply to this email."

And you should Reply to the Email by following the instructions, "Reply to this Personal Message here: <Reply-To Address>"

I am getting about 4 emails a day from people who are replying to the Email sent FROM THE SERVER instead of using the Forum to return the Message, and their replys are ending up in my mail box instead.

I am getting emails that are bounced to my account every day of messages from those who don't realize that the letter sent to their email address is ONLY A NOTIFICATION. If you reply to a Notification Email from the Forum, then it will be forwarded to my Email Inbox and I can see what you are writing :nonono:  :nonono:  :nonono:

Just for today,
1) I got 4 emails from the same member who was trying to send pictures of a white 1st gen Yota, possibly to make a sale.
5) I got an email from a Gavin Brown talking about a quick payment.
6) I got an email from a Kyle Hansen who was trying to send a reply message to a NUb.
7) And I got an email from "chameleon" who was asking about shipping costs.

So that is 7 Emails that we REPLIED to instead of using the appropriate "Reply to this Personal Message here:" link.

I don't want to know what you guys are talking about, or who you are sending messages to and from, so please do your part in protecting your privacy by following the IMPORTANT direction and reply to your Personal Messages by using the link provided.

Thankyou
BigMike

well, there actually is a link in the bottom portion of the email you get.... and it will link to your private mail box and allow it that way....

what mike is talking about, is when you get the email notification, it posts waht the pm was... and some people hit the reply-to button on their browser/mail server.... when they do that, the mail gets sent back to mike.....

if you use the link @ the bottom of hte email, then its ok

For security reasons.  You must be here awhile before you can access them.  There is a set amount of valid posts you must have in order to view.  Let me warn you, it may not be anything important. :dunno:

A simple fix would be to not inclued what the PM says in the notification, that way the user will have to go to their PM box to find out.

Hey mike people still doing this?

I hate it when that happens. I am on a few other boards and here of people doing this alot. Even "Senior Members" who have been on the forums forever.

troyman

Dunno if your forum software allows it, but some of them you can use a generic account like "[email protected]" when you send out the PM notification.  It's just a generic username but doesn't actually have an email account associated with it.  That way the person not following directions gets a bounce back as well.  :_oops:
