Identify Duals?
« on: Nov 01, 2005, 03:02:14 PM »
Does anyone know if Marlin marks the T-cases he puts 4.7's in? I am looking at buying a set of duals but the guy doesn't know what gears are in either case. I don't want to over pay for two 2.28's, but then if the guy has 2.28 and 4.7 combo I want to give him what he is asking. Any thoughts? Thanks

I think the easiest way would be to take the shifters out and see if the shift rails/forks have been clearanced for the bigger gears.  If marlin built the cases then they might have markings on it.  But if someone else built them then most likely not.

are we talking about obvious ginding? Like making the inside gap of the shift fork wider?

These are taken from the marlin crawler 4.7 gear instructions.  These two things need to be clearanced in order for the gears to clear them becasue then ew gears are larger.  You can look in throught the shifter hole and see if these have been clearanced.  If they are then the case has aftermarket gears.  But it won't tell you what kind of gears it has.

Step 49: Using a grinder or file, remove inside radius on shift forks(s).

Step 50: Top shift case only. Using a grinder, clearance shift block as shown above.

The adapter should have a stamp on it like this:

If you get that, you can go here: http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=4.0
And see if you can find the owners screen name, then search to see if he posted up a 4.7 gear set also.

Put the front case in high, and the rear case in low. Start spinning the input, and see how many rotations it goes for every rotation of the output shaft. Then put the rear inhigh, and the front in low and do it again (incase there are gears installed in the front case.)

That is the best way to find out. Then there's no doubt.
The number on the adapter usually refers to the adapter itself. Tcases with gears used to all have the number stamped similarly to the adapter, but on the edge of the tcase. I'm not sure if they are still doing it that way. I have seen them on the input too, but that doesn't help unless you pull it apart.
Put a mark on the input and a mark on the rear flange. Spin the input with one box in low at a time and count how many times you turn the input per one revolution of the output.
A little more than 2 turns at the input is stock, almost 5 is crawler gears.

Then you have to flip a quarter to determine if they gears are  :turtle:  or a copy.
