Help with Identify my transmission
« on: Apr 03, 2009, 09:28:13 AM »
I bought the trans not nowing what year it came out of, it had a forward shift t case on it, I didn't find any tags on it. I looked at the pics of all the transmissions on marlins page. I can get pics in a few if that helps. Is thier any thing i should look for to identify, the slave cyl is on the pasanger side.

Reply with only 1 picture, the serial number (found on the side of the rear flange of the front housing), and if possible, remove the front nose cone and let us know what number is on the bearing (but this is optional and overkill if you can take a pic + send serial number).

Sorry I don't have pics, camera broke. I found a number on the bottom of the trans of the rear flange of the front part, it is 51023048. Hope this helps

Thank you for that info.

You have a 5-speed W56-C from a 1990 4-cylinder truck

Wait up... I think I am wrong. I need to double check on this but now I think it might be a G54 from a 1985 4cyl carbureted truck.

I'll check on Monday to be sure.

I didn't see it listed on that link but I want to say the G series has 8 bolts in the center and the W series has 9..  Plus if it's a G the center will be aluminum and that W-56C would be steel.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

You were doing good until...

All G52/54/58 center sections are cast iron  The only aluminum center section I know of is on the W56-A (1985 only).

Wow VERY nice article :beerchug:

This has confirmed,
I think it might be a G54 from a 1985 4cyl carbureted truck.

CATDoctor, there is a 99.9% chance you have a G54 5spd transmission from a 1985 carbureted 4cyl pickup truck, or a 0.1% chance you have a W56-E 5spd transmission from a 1995 fuel injected 4cyl pickup or 4Runner.

This can be settled with one question: Is the shifter base a one piece 6-bolt base where both the trans and t/case shifters are mounted, or are there two separate 4-bolt bases where each shifter mounts atop its own 4-bolt base (8-bolts total)?

Thanks
Mike

Shows what I know...  :hahaha:  I knew the W56A was aluminum so I ASSumed the G series was too..  Should have known

so... two separate shifter bases, right? How many bolts total are holding both the transmission and the transfer case handles to the top of the transmission? 6 or 8?

Does it look like this, two 4 bolt bases:

Or this, 6 bolt single base:

I was wondering if someone could tell me what this transmission is, I was told it was an 87 turbo tranny but after reading about the rubber plug I have my doubts since there is no rubber plug.

31220863

I was unable to find any numbers on the tcase.
