Just looking for an answer
« on: Oct 17, 2005, 12:36:17 PM »
Here's a question i just wanted answered.   Why is it that i can not find anything for a nissan pickup in terms of a suspension lift, other than a 2.5" lift which is nothing i couldn't make on my own.  Why is there so much of a difference compared to a yota.   The only other option i can come up with is straight axel swap a d-30 and buid off of that.   i know that is probaly the best way to go but i was just curious on why i could't find anything i need.             Any ideas anyone?

they never really made anything for a nissan, unless you have something custom built which will run you quite a bit of money. straight axle is probably your best bet. as far as the dana 30,it will hold up if you treat it right. my brother ran a dana 30 on his Jeep before going 1tons. he ran 40 inch boggers and 4:56 gears and never broke the d30. but I would probably go with a dana 44 or maybe even toyota.depends on what you want the truck for. just my  :twocents:

Nissan Never offered a straight axle here in the states. This all by it's self most likely kept Nissan from being a competitor to Toyota for the 4x4 aftermarket. I have done a lot with Nissan's but it is a lot more work to get it like Toyota came stock. I would do a straight axle swap an use Toy axles because of the parts that are available for them. They will stand up to v6 and some v8 engines and have been said to be as strong as a stock Dana 60 with the rite birfs. I you have a 79 to 86 (720) you can use a Toy front without modification due to the transfercase output being in the middle. If you have a 86 1/2 and newer (D21) you can flip the Toy housing and rotate the end balls to make a driver side third or use the Dana 44.

I would like to see an adapter made that will allow for a Toyota Tcase to be mounted to the Nissan trans so the output will be rite for the Toyota front axle and you could do duals or even triples on a Nissan. That would be cool.

This is an 88 with a flipped Toy axle.

What's a LTB? Nope on the adapter. I would like to give it a try though. Mrs W's pathfinder may need an SAS and Marlin crawl box someday.

How come i can only find the kits for a two wheel drive?    is it possible to take that kit and make something out of it to save some custom fab. or will it just be a waste of money.    I never thought of flipping a yota axel by the way, good advice.

If you are serious about doing anything worth while, I would not waist any effort on the IFS. you could get a Toy SAS kit and convert to Toy axles. Gears and lockers will be cheaper and there are way more parts to choose from. I would rather see you convert to a Toy T case too so you would not have to mess with custom building a front axle as this is labor intensive. You would then be able to get lower Tcase gear sets and be able to stack the low range boxes.

What year truck do you have and which engine and trans?

Its a 95" hardbody with the 2.4 and a five speed, not sure exactly which one.

The 2.4 is a good engine. Does it still have 8 plugs? If you do rocks you don't need a big bad engine, just low gears.

Even if there was an adapter for using the Toy case, there is not a whole lot of room on the passenger side. The drivetrain in my truck is offset to the right a bit and looks like there would be a lot involved to get a driveshaft room on that side. I'm not sure what you are out to achieve with your truck, but there are some products out there. There is a 4" Trailmaster lift available for the D21 (chassis spec of your truck) There have been quite a few SAS done to that chassis. Lockers are available for the rear and there are lower transfer case gears available as well. Products are out there, you just have to look harder to find them.

With all due respect to Marlin and the members of this board, visit www.Nissan4Wheelers.com You'll find a lot of Nissan info there and get leads on where to get things you ned for them. Good luck, and if you have any questions just ask, I will help in whatever way I can.

If the link is out of line please feel free to delete it or let me know and i will edit it.

Lator....
Nissan's need Marlin too. Won't you help?

no the 8 plug was the z24 motor.  I used to have a 89 with that motor and i would change them in an instant.   That motor was a realy stong and fast motor.    I really miss that truck, but i guess thats what happens when you slide sideways and hook a stump at 45.  for a brief second i was looking straight down at everything.      Thanks for all of the info i really appriciate it.

The pre 86.5 nissan's only lift options are body lift or a upper A-arm lift.  Because the whole front end is welded to the frame!  Post 86.5 trailmaster makes a lift kit for it.  But I was never impressed.  Personally, I've got a 85 nissan and I'm just waiting to get a toyota!  Just for the simple reason that there are a million companies, parts and options that you can do to a toy than a Nissan.  Not that nissan's aren't good rigs.   I've put alot of hard off road miles on mine, but I really want a sas toy!  Just for the simple fact of better ground clearance and articulation!
Miss ya Dean (4THEWKN) & Kyle (KYOTA)!!

4THEWKN~9/17/2006  If it wasn't for you, I'd be driving something other than a Toyota!
