ATTN: BigMike (3rz wiring ???'s)
« on: Oct 06, 2005, 03:03:50 PM »
droped my tranny to install new clutch, forgot to unbolt the connectors for the rear o2 sensor from the tranny, ripped the wires outta the famale end of the connector.  ive had it in the shop 3 times to fix these wires and every time i get it back it gets a trouble code after about 40 miles. so here are my ???'s

are those connectors that the o2 sensors plug into reusable? if so, how the hell do you re use them?
if they are not reuseable, any advice on how to get this taken care of ?  i had my mechanic get a connector from the boneyard w/ about 1' of wire on it and splice it into the the existing wires but this is not working. the only reason i put this to your attn. is cause of the thread about the 3rz swap into marlin's truck, i figure you might some info for me, and suggestions would be great. thanks

you sure the wires going into the O2 sensor are still good?  Could have broken them inside the sensor...

nah the actual o2 sensor was unplugged and its wires and connector were just hangin off the exaust, but the female end of that connecter is held in place by a small bracket on the tranny, i forgot to unbolt this bracket and when the tranny dropped it ripped that female end right off the wires

ive also replaced the o2 sensor since this all happend so eventhough it might need some cleaning due the air/fuel being so rich for so long, im pretty sure its still good

Well,

Actually when I was doing the wiring on Dean's 3RZ, we had a missing plug on the interior side.

There are four wires, and you should only be concerned with two of them..

White-Red = Constant on +12v Power
Black-Red = IGN On +12v Power
Black = Signal for Sensor
Black = Ground for Heating Element

So if you get those two black wires crossed up, then switch them around. The 3RZ has two o2 sensors, so compare the wiring with the other one, and if everything looks right but it is still throwing the code, then try switching those two black wires. Maybe they are just both crossed?

Good luck
BigMike

Also, on the newer 2001+ systems, the 2nd oxygen sensor is not called an oxygen sensor, but rather a "Air/Fuel sensor".

That's weird, and I remember that the wiring is different. It has a Red-white or a red-yellow wire for the power and I think a green wire also, I completely forgot. I will have to look at Bevin's the next time I am at his house.

But the first sensor is called by the book as an "O2" sensor, and it has the correct WR, BR, B, B wires that I mentioned above.

But on my early 3RZ (1995-97?) both are called "O2" sensors by the book, and they both have the exact same wiring on both wires.

Good luck,
Cya

To add to big mike's info, the A/F sensor and O2 sensors are not interchangeable.  They're called different things and are indeed 2 different parts with 2 different part numbers.

The gold pins in the connector are for the sensing portion of the sensor, and the other two are for the heating element.

Yes, you can actually buy the individual connectors and pins from the dealership.  You will have to find a parts guy that is patient enough that he will order the connectors, but it can be done on a truck as new as yours.  You can also get the wiring repair pins from the wiring harness repair kit that every dealership has (or should have...).

Good luck!

The pins are the actual metal contacts inside the plastic connector.

You should be able to buy JUST the plastic connector housing (no wires or pins), and then some pins with 4" wire pigtails attached to clip into the plastic connector housing.
