Valvetrain woes

So I popped off my valve cover today just to once again try to see what is making my valvetrain scream around 3500rpm and to replace my valve cover gasket.

Come to find the exhaust lobe for #2 cylinder has an 1/8" lip on it from the lifter grinding down on it.  The lifter shifted forward, so it's not making full contact with the lobe, which is why the lip is there.  I :pokinit: myself.  I never saw a cam that tore up on a street truck.  The lip is just around the peak and sides of the top of the lobe (where it's pointiest).  The cam and lifters are less than 6 months old because I had this problem before, but on different cylinders.

What the hell could be causing this?  Bad valve springs?

I need a new cam, I'm going to get a Crane since I get dealer discount on them, and I don't think Comp Cams makes any for the 22re.  Anyone ever used a Crane in a Toyota?  What lift/duration do you recommend for the most power,  without needing to modify anything.  Also, what is stock lift/duration on a 22re?

Check your set screws, I just went through that last year on my #3 exhaust valve. Turns out the threads had pulled out over time. Believe it or not this can happen when you regularly adjust your valves, they just wear out over time. I sleeved mine and it now works fine.

Set screw as in the screw that sets the play in the lifter?

Rocksurfer

:yesnod: Yes the adjusting screw pulled the threads out of the rocker arm which allowed the lock nut to loosen and back out. Since it's a pain to pull the whole valve train I put an thread insert in the rocker and it has been fine since then.

Anytime you put a new cam in you need to put new valve springs. I would probably replace the whole rocker arm and shaft assembly. Sounds like you could possibly have an oiling issue on the rocker shafts. As far as the rocker being centered on the cam lobe , I have never seen a toyota that the rocker was perfectly centered on the cam lobe. Usually they will be slightly to one side.

Comp does make cams for a 22re. I would reccomend a comp 260s. :twocents:

I want a cam that produces a lot of power, without having to change anything else.

:headshake:  It's not that simple. You can't just put a huge cam without any other mods and expect a huge power gain. For a big cam to be effective your gonna have to get more air/fuel in and more exhaust out. Stick with a good low end cam. A cam with a high lift and duration is for high RPM's. Unless you plan on street racing your trail rig that is not what you want. :ha_ha:

when you replaced your rockers did you make sure you assembled the shafts correctly?
sounds more like an oiling problem. take your rocker shaft apart and make sure the
oiling holes are clear. and when you reassemble make sure each rocker is over a oil hole.
i did the same thing back in the late 70s on a 20r. only the cam didnt last 10 mins. :twocents:

????

I know that, which is why I asked what is the biggest cam I can throw in without having to change anything else.......

Meh, this is the cam I will get.  Pretty much the same specs as LC's, but a lot cheaper.  All LC recommends is a header and filter charger.  I'm running straight pipes and a drilled to hell and back air box so I should be good.
