So im getting ready to get some 35x12.50s or 36.13.50s for 4runner and i was planning on running them on some 15x8 rims that i already have, but when i went into the local tire shop the owner told me i need to run 15x10 or 15x12 for those sizes of tires.  Is he correct?  Is it unsafe to run 35s on 15x8 rims?  Sorry if this is a stupid question.... but ive never bought tires bigger than 31x10.50s before.  Thanks in advance.

"Later, I learned that even though I engage 4WD my hubs are not automatically locking? Something about manual locking hubs I think. What's manual mean? I need to read a manual to lock them? lol  So I found these neat autolocking hubs and installed them. Sometimes they dont stay locked while I am backing up, but that's fine because I dont have a backup camera to see where Im going (like our RV) so I just simply dont ever back up"- BigMike

If you run the 35X12.50 you should be fine with a 15X8 rim. But if you go with a wider tire like the 36X13.50 you would have to go up to a 15X10 rim. no need for 15X12.

I've always ran 12.50 wide tires on 8" rims. I don't like having the rim sticking out as far as the sidewall with 10'' rim. You'll be more likely to blow a bead with the 10's.

There's definately not a safety issue. Sounds to me like your local tire shop just wanted to sell you some 10'' wheels.

FIREBALL

I agree too. I've always run 12.50 tires on 8" wheels. Holds the bead better, and easier to put the tire back on if you do blow a bead.

MiniSimp

I'm running my 35x12.50 BFG's on 8" wheels and my 35x14.50 Boggers (actually measure 35x16) on 10" wheels.

Ebbs15

I had the same thing happen to me... I was trying to mount 33x12.50's on a 8" rim and they not only said I should be using a 10" wheel... they FLAT OUT REFUSED to mount them! saying they wouldn't fit...  so I drove across the street to nappa and bought a can of WD40 and with the help of my lighter mounted them myself   :flamer:    then took them back and had them balance them...  the guy swore up and down I went and got 10" wheels...   :shake:

when i was shopping for my tsl's the only place that even gave me a hard time about using the 8"wheel on a 12.50 was big o. he didnt say he wouldnt mount them that way but wouldnt give me a warrentee. both discount and schwab had no problem with it. ya just need to talk to the right guys i guess

I've had 315/75s (same as 35x12.50) on my 80 series LC with 8" rims for about 40k mi with no problems at all. My mini is running with 10" rims, but that's only because there was a good used set available locally for the right price.

I like the 8's better.  I ran 10's on my 33's and didn't like them.  I have ran 8's on the 35's and now the 37's and love them.  The tire shop i bought the rims from said that 8 inch rims would work wit ha 37x12.5.  they are all "I run 35 on my jeep and i have 10 inch rims"  I was like "Thats cool, i have 35's right now and i have 8 inch rims.  Now i want to buy new 8 inch rims that will be put on my new 37's"  They just said ok after that.  James is running 37x12.5 on 10 inch rims.  He hasn't had any problems, but i don't like the look of them.

norcalyoter

i run a 33x12.50 on an 8 and i want to go to a 35 the tire shop i went to said no prob w/ the 35 on an 8 it would it just wouldnt as wide of a foot print and the tire would be a little more relaxed on an 10  :slap:  i was like really no way

Hyena

You will have a better chance of blowing a bead with an 10 inch rim and a 12.5 inch tire.

86turboyota

thanks for the input guys, im glad that i dont have to buy new rims just to run 35s.

I ran 36x13.5's on 8" rims with no problems on my cruiser.  I ran 5 psi and didn't blow a bead, but I did get some dirt in the bead making a PIA leak.

Typically, wheel/tire mfrs. say tire width should be within 4 inches of rim width either way...+ or -.  But that is mainly to increase the tire's "footprint" on the road, at street pressure.  You can go more off road or on a light pickup since the pressure is usually lower than normal.

:)   I run 10'' rims with 35/12.5/15 Xterrains...I've done the Hammers at 8 PSI and have never had a problem.  I have never blown a bead... just a Birfield!   :twocents:

At Schwab I've mounted 12.50's on factory 7" toy wheels before, looks like shiat!!  Off road 8" would be better like others have said, on hwy, if it's a DD I would recommend a 10" better wear, and mileage.  8" you'll have to run lower air psi to get them to wear decent, (on hwy) which in turn is going to create more rolling resisitance, and decrease gas mileage!

Just to add to the hat, I'm running 35/15/12.50 on 8" wheels, and next summer I will move up to a 37/15/13.50 tire, which is 1" wider, so I will run a 9" wheel. I would only run a 10" wheel if I had a 14.50" or wider tire

I have a set of 15x8 with 2.5" backspacing but friends are saying get 10" rims.  this will be on a pickup with 4" of lift.

did u even read this thread? go with some 8" rims for 12.5. Lift height has nothing to do with your rim width

BFG recommends 8.5-11 inch wheels with a 35x12.50 tire and Interco says to use a 10 inch wheels with the 36x13.50 IROK.

Another thread from the dead by a newbie :rofl2:  I'm going to be mounting my 35x12.50 bfgs on 8.5" wheels.  My 8.5s always seem to be more than .5" wider than a regular 8" wheel, pretty close to too wide for my 31x10.5s on there now.

Oh yea, dtb isn't being mean to you, he's one of the nicest people on the board.  He's just giving you a little bit of a hard time.  Don't worry about it, happens every time a newbie digs up an old thread.  Atleast you didn't dig one up from 02 or something

38x12.5 sx's  10 rim 4psi never lost a bead...my brother runs 38.5x14.50 sx's at 2psi never lost a bead (I have actually seen him spin the rim inside the tire without losing the bead but lost some air)
