Am I nuts??
« on: Aug 26, 2005, 07:50:16 PM »
Ok, I bought my 85 (preivously rolled) thinking it wouldn't take much to make it street legal in CA.  I putting a flat bed on it to compensate for no bed and I'm not worried about smog because I'm all but certain it will pass.  Now I'm worried I'm gonna end up dumping too much money into to make it street legal.  Green sticker is not an option with me.  Can some Cali people give me some pointers on how to make buildups street legal and how much detail I need to get into.

Also what all will they check for besides a VIN and smog when I register it here?  I'll also need to fill out the lost title thingy (I got a bill of sale when I bought it).

Right now I about to pull my hair out worrying about registering it and my apartment complex sent a letter out saying they are going to start towing vehicles without current registration.  HELP ME PLEASE!!

Where did it come from? Was it a Cali vehicle, or did you bring it in from out of state? I there a record on file with the DMV? Will you have to have it inspected before it can be registerd?

You may have to dig for the answers but here's a link to the California Vehicle code book:

The person you bought it from, were they the registered owner? If not you may have a problem registering it. The DMV will want a application for duplicate title from the registered owner not just a Bill of Sale. I hope you can get in touch with them,  and get one filled out.

The DMV will need these items to transfer ownership of a vehicle to your name:

California Certificate of Title (Pink Slip) or Application for Duplicate Title (REG 227) if the title is lost.

Signature(s) of seller(s) and lienholder, if any, on the Certificate of Title.

Signature(s) of buyer(s) on the Certificate of Title.

Odometer disclosure for vehicles less than 10 years old.

 Smog certification.

 Transfer fee.

Use tax and/or various other fees.

Since you don't have the title you will need to have the R.O. fill out this form as a transfer of ownership with duplicate title, here's the form (needs Adobe to open):

Thanks with all the info, sounds like you've dealt with this before.  The vehicle was registered in California and it ran out in July so I'll have to pay the use tax and the other stuff since I didn't transfer the title right after I bought it.  I bought it from the registered owner, I'm just wondering what kind of inspections they'll do or if they will look at anything other than the VIN and the current smog.  I also just got it insured so I don't have any worry there.

Man, I wish I was back in Kansas.  You can get anything tagged and street legal there.  Hell, where my parents live they'll let you drive a quad on the street if it's got turn signals and brake lights.  But then again, I wouldn't be this close to the hammers!!.

It's what I do.... so it is a Cali vehicle you won't need any inspection by the DMV or CHP,  just a smog cert. That is a good thing because I don't think it will meet the scrutiny of a brake & light inspection either. Just get the R.O. to fill out that dup. title form, smog it and you should be good to go. No need to show insurance on transfer of ownership either.

No, you just need the dup form, smog cert. and $ The only time they will want to inspect the vehicle is if it is an out of state vehicle, a salvaged cert. vehicle or if there were no record on file with the DMV. Which is why I asked those questons.

California requires offroad vehicles to be registered.  A green sticker means it is registered, but isn't street legal, doesn't have to pass smog, but can be driven offroad.  Technically, a green stickered rig's tires aren't allowed to touch the street/highway.
