Today I decided to buy this 86 4x4 Pickup. I do not have it yet, they are going to get it smogged for me, then I can pick it up. Many of you know I have been looking for a Yota for a long time, and I finally found this one, and got a great deal.

It's an 1986 with a 22R & 5spd. Has power steering & A/C too.

For now here is a picture of it. I have BIG plans for this truck. I will post more once I pick it up and begin my work on her.  ;)

Plans for my 86 :psss:

I want to do the SAS/tires/gears/locker all at the same time. Then once I get that done, next project will be the Vortec swap. I better start savin the :twocents: now. Marlin is going to be happy to have me as a customer ;)

I did my lift/tires/gears before my 4.3 swap as well and I still have some unresolved isssues because of it.  I didn't do myself any favors with my approach but the hi-pinion front third member is killing me for front driveshaft clearance with the 4L60E transmission pan.  Of course this may not apply if you're keeping the Yota tranny but I thought I'd mention it.  Others on the board have done the 4.3 swap (Dean aka 4.3 Headache aka 4THEWKN, Trackvino, etc) and could probably help with what works and what doesn't.

Looks like a hell of a build so keep us posted.
If it never breaks, people can only speculate how much it was overbuilt.

very simialir to mine, except i'm doing ARB in front and spool in rear"crazy for a D/D,but i like gettin sideways and i'm doing a exo, same gearing and tires.we'll have to compare our build up's when their done...

honke, 5.29's and a 4.3l.... thats way too much gearing for 36's, especially if you have a 5spd, for 36's 4.88's would be ideal, and that would be right for 36's, 37's, and 38's, especially if you do a lower gear in the tcase...with the 4.3l, you could run 4.56 with 36's amd get away with it easily, and 4.56's are stronger than 4.88 and which are stronger that 5.29, b/c there would be more teeth on the pinion gear...with 5.29's, the teeth on the pinion start to wrap around so much, you might only have 4-6 teeth, meaning that the torque(lb-fts) from the driveshaft would be spread out over a smaller surface area on the pinion gear, than with 4.88, which typically have 6-8 teeth on the pinion, while 4.56 typically range from 8-11 pinion teeth......just some things to think about since you are at the beginning of you buildup

Thanks Mac for the tips!

What if I went with a 22RE and lower tcase gears? 4.88 gearing for some 35" goodyear MTR's?
1980 SR5 shortbed pickup (Project Rust Bucket)

Ramrod

just go 5:29's don't listen to the jeep owner.  many people run those gears with a 4.3 and almost everyone runs them with 22r's

h0nke

Eww Jeep, didnt notice until now.

if you are going to run a 22re with 35's deffinately use 5.29's. if you run the 4.3 then 4.88's would be ok, 5.29's would work too, you're just going to be a little higher in RPMs at interstate speeds. just keep in mind that you might want 35's now but eventually you'll want 37's then 38's then........... you get the point! so i would go with 5.29's. i have 5.29's in my toy with 37 MTR's and a built up 22r. i run about 3500 RPM @ 75 MPH on the interstate. I recommend 5.29's! :yesnod:

my truck will see a lot of huntin, so 35" for good probably. i wont say never, maybe someday some 37" MTR will find their way under there. im obsessed with MTR. super swamper suk ass. ;)

my stock ifs is so tired man, i cant wait for SAS. i outta take a pic of my front suspension and shocks, its sad.

tell me more about your built up 22R, im obsessed. :)

75 with 37" mtrs and 5:29s shouldn't be a problem.  My motor is as beat as they get and I can do that.  I have done 85 before to a couple of times.  plus what does tire size have to do with hunting out of your truck.  I am 5' 6" and  I have loaded two deer into the back of my truck by myself and plowed through many a bush.

Mac5005

What the flopp is yalls damn problems with jeeps, it doesnt matter what someone has, its just the fact that we have something and we built it, and we take it wheeling...if yall have a damn problem with me and my jeep or doubt my knowledge or ability b/c i have a jeep and not a toyota, bring your :pokinit: to NC and well settle it on the trail and in the marsh

I take pride in keeping my truck abd shirt out of the local marsh with all the other idiots

oh I don't have a problem with jeeps themselves, just the whole jeep thing
