Tranny problems
« on: Aug 20, 2005, 04:17:41 PM »
Any suggestions on my 5 speed trans in my 89' 4x4.  The syncro is going out on 3rd and 4th gear.  It's not bad enough to stop driving it, but it's gonna get worse. The parts supply here in the Midwest is pretty bleek, and I don't want to spend a ton of cash.  Is it worth ordering one from Marlin, or just go to a junk yard?

Order it from marlin and never buy another one... get a wrecker and buy another one in a year or two....

I bought one from Marlin after my W56 lost 4th gear and 3rd was close behind. Its a chunk of change but I beleive all these guys when they say it will last forever. I thought about a junkyard but my thoughts were the same...how long will it last. Atleast you know you have one from a known company and can trust that it was rebuilt good.

I beat the heck out of my tranny. Towed car trailers, U-haul trailers (to Vegas, weighed 4k). Driven all over the western states & wheeled the heck out of it. It finally gave up the ghost on the last leg of a 3500 mile trip. That was 200,000 miles after Marlin rebuilt it. I would say I got way more than my monies worth out of that rebuild
