Author Topic: Engine dies while driving (Read 3721 times)

My motor had this problem a while back, it went away, but I drove 3 hours on the interstate and towards the end of the journey it came back.

I'll be driving along and feel the motor lose power, almost like the clutch is pressed in just enough to make noticable slip, then I feel the motor die. And then I promptly get kicked in the ass from my truck jump starting at 70mph. It bucks like hell when power comes back up.

Any ideas? It really only does this when the truck has been doing a lot of highway speed driving.

mine did that about a week ago. check your gas tank to see if there is anything in it. someone peed in mine.

also, check your fuses and air filter

have you changed the fuel filter lately? That's where I'd start.

That's what I was gonna say.... I've heard of that happening.... and the solution was a new fuel filter

possible short in the fuel relay, but then you could have a ignition problem = plenty of fuel in the engine then no spark, = mucho raw fuel then spark and KABAAAMMM and hence the

No short in the fuel relay because it's hard wired to a switch. No relay involved.

Also, why would the fuel filter start acting up only when run for a few hours at high speeds?

when you get on it, or you pull a lot of fuel through, quickly, if the filter is plugged(or plugging) you can run out of fuel momentarily. Basically, you empty the filter and it dies down, then fuel rushes back through.

I could understand it being the fuel filter if I pulled out of my driveway, floored it, and it did it. But like I said it only does it after a long while of highway speed driving.

Not to buck conventional thought, but from what you're sayin happens I really doubt it's fuel. I would really lean toward an electrical short, possibly in the wire loom, but it kinda sounds like a battery cable has a bad section or a bad connection. Start small and simple, if you go lookin for a big problem it's probably something real simple. You might check on harbor freight's website, I remember seein a short tester in their catalog. You just run it over the wires and it blinks or something when you find the short. Good luck.

whoever said the fuel filter idea is right, mine did the same thing and i couldnt figure out what the hell it was. it does it anytime you are driving at any rpm, studders with black smoke then kick back to life. talked to the mechanic at the toyota dealorship and he told me right away that it was the fuel filter. they will get clogged and starve the motor=loss of power, then get a burst of dirty fuel=black smoke, then a kick=cleaner fuel coming back in.

I'm hoping for anything BUT a fuel filter, those things are nuts to change on a 22re.

ive heard of the mass air sensor doing that................there's a little thing in them that heats up and it shuts its self off. Dont quote me but anything info is go info if you cant find the problem. But remeber i dont know this for sure so dont come back and start flippin on me if you go out and buy one and its not the problem.

ohhhh one more thing..........do you have a kill switch in that thing?

i forgot i had the same problem as you and my kill switch was arcing out.

I have a kill switch to the fuel pump, but the problem existed before the kill switch was there.
