Auto to manual tranny swap
« on: Aug 14, 2005, 08:09:10 PM »
Well I finally got all the parts rounded up for the swap.  Okay, I have 98% of them, and that's close enough to get things started.  I started by disassembling one of the transfer cases for the crawl box.  I found I could do everything at home except press the bearing off the main shaft.  I had to take it to a shop.

I wasn't sure if I wanted to attempt this myself, but it was really quite easy.

Next was the assembly of the crawl box.  This was pretty straight forward as well

I'll try to get some shots of that stuff.  That will be towards the end, unless I get bogged down somewhere and need something else to work on.

Next was bolting on the other transfer case

I ran into my first problem tonight.  The rear tranny seal in my kit appears to be the wrong size.  It's just a little bit too large.  It's loose on the shaft and it will not fit into the tranny housing.

I decided to get the auto ready to pull.  I got everything unhooked, disconnected or removed with the exception of the top driver's side tranny bolt.  Man, that thing is a @#&%$! .  Anyone got any tips/tricks for removing it???

Put a jack under the transfer case or tranny and un bolt the transfer case crossmember.  Let the tcase drop a few inches to gain some clearance.  Use a 36" long 1/2" drive extension with a 17mm socket/ujoint on the end.  If you've got an impact wrench that'll take it right out.  Without an impact, you'll need a buddy to help you steady the extension and you'll have to tug on a breaker bar.  A grunt and a fart later it should be out.   :beerchug:

What year is your rig?  Is your auto trans electronically controlled, or older than that?

Hey, thanks for the tip!  I was using the long extension and ujoint combo, but it was 3/8" and the extension was twisting.  I need to go buy a long 1/2"

It's an 85, A340H (electronic)

I can try and take some pics of my donor truck tonight if that would help.

you could cut a little hoel in your floor to get to it. had a buddy that did it and if you're carefull when you're done you can just bend it back down (there will still be the cut but you can bend the floor back down) and put the carpet back over it and call it good.
remember no matter how bad life gets there's always beer.

Made a little more progress tonight.  While waiting for my help to arrive, I got the cases bolted to the W-56

Had a couple pics but can't post them.  It said something about the upload folder being full and to contact an administrator.  Oh well, I'll try again tomorrow.

Also finally got the auto removed
