my question is, what is better to wheel with, an extended cab for added wheelbase or a regular cab. ive got one of each a 91 ex cab and a 94 reg. i want to know which truck i should do the SAS on and which one I should use for a daily driver?
anyone with experience with the 2 your input would be much apreciated, or anybody with a general opinion
Thanks

i'd do the x-cab, it's nice to have some place inside for other things then spare parts, like food...

Im a wheelbase freak myself, Im running a 127 1/2" 90 x-cab and Ill NEVER go shorter.  THe trails are a bit of a challenge but Ill trade that for being able to climb straight up and not worry about flipping it over.  Ive noticed that many of the lines that i can take easily with my stretch limo most shorter rigs have issues with.  :gap:

the only place that i can tell a difference while sheeling them now is its easier going down hill with the ex cab but the crossmember gets hung up a lot because of ground clearance. the reason im asking is im about to order a crawl box and wanted to know which on eto put it in, ive also got a set of 35's that im gunn stuff with no lift, major fender and floor board trimming about to be under way. im going to try and build it as low as possible for more stability on off camber trails, but still have most of the off road capabilities of a lifted rig.

Ok so basically your building my truck. ;)  Go to the projects section and find a thread titled $300.  Read from page 9-26 and you'll find all the answers you need.  Mine is low, long and I have a perfectly flat belly.  At street pressure Ive got 27" of clearance between the ground and my undercarriage.

Use the reg. cab and give the ex-cab to me  .  You dont want wheel base, thats popy-kock.

Ok seriously, I want the ex-cab because they are more convienient, does not matter which cab you use, you can still make it what ever wheelbase you want.  Regular cab = less body damage.      Let me know on that ex-cab

Either rig will be a competant wheeler, it really boils down to which one you would prefer to keep as your DD, i.e., the one you are going to spend the most of your time in.

My friends that wheel standard cabs wish they had the extra interior space for gear, especially durring the winter(rain/snow), and the taller ones wish they had more leg room.  I myself have a '90 x-cab that has been my DD/trail rig since it was new, and I am now currently building myself a '91 X-cab as a trail rig only, basically using the same principles as you, no lift and cut the fenders and build a flat bed(easy choice since fenders/bed are already trashed), though I will be keeeping it IFS for now(might be SAS'd by next Aprils Jambo)

I have the lwb no extra cab so it has the same wb, and I have owned standard wb's yota's too. So far I like the added wb, like WT said the wb helps a lot when it comes to straight up climbs, some of my friends with the short wb's are still climbing when their rears have to start up while I've already broke over the top with my fronts and my rears are just starting up.

I love the long wheel base of my xcab, and wouldnt trade the inside room for anything. It's nice to go wheelin, ande not have to wory about the weather, cause I can put all my clothes, sleeping  bag and stuff in the cab, and leave the tools, cooler, and spare in the bed.  Also, I can sleep in my truck easily, by leaning the seat back, which is very nice.

im not really worried about the sleeping arangements cause ive got a pop up camper that i can drag around. but i have noticed it is slightly easier wheelin the longer wheel base. both have 33's and a locker in the rear (aussie lockers rock for the price) i liked the first one so much i bought one for the other one just because.

but what i didnt ad earlier was that the short cab has a fresh motor and the ex cab has 150k and dont know if it candle my right foot(ex drag racer converted to yoda junkie)
its really not much different though, lookin straight down a track or straight up a hill

oh and another question i was going to ask, has anybody ever put in a crawl box with a body lift and a bench seat?

WHITE_TRASH

My truck is at 126k and I have a lot of time logged in with the tach bouncing off the 6200 rpm rev limiter with no issues.  I wouldnt worry about it, in reality Id rather have the new engine in the dd anyway cause if you cant get to work you cant afford to go wheeling. ;)

This would be difficult, and all but impossible if you had to have the seat moved forward. though not impossible.  IIRC the second t-case shifter sits back about 6" from the first one.  I have seen some in std. cabs w/o buchets and the owner's have cut a hole in the the seat for the shifter.  I did see in a write-up on a 4 Runner that had the 2nd shifter right next to the first one( may have been with a BL).  Your best bet would be to contact Marlin and see what he thinks.  If you use the std. cab,  just install a set of buckets, I find buckets are much better for wheeling than a bench is anyways.

ShawnB is running a bench in his 85 standard cab with duals.  The rear shifter is bent about as far forward as you can get it but it works.

Dude, there's been times when I'd give my Left Arm for an extra cab.  I love the extra room inside for stuff and being able to recline the drivers seat just one more click would make my single cab SO much more comfortable.  If you have the option, I say go for the x-cab!

what if i made a shifter that looked like a big S, or connected the first shifter to the second one and cut it off shorter than the floor.

91 super yoda

nevermind the connecting idea, that defeats the purpose of a second case

WHITE_TRASH

Marlin sells offset shifters that'd be perfect for running a bench.  I was going to make one for ShawnB's truck but bending it proved to make it work. ;)
