1985 toy 22re. Motor has 9,415 miles w/eb kit. New head from eb with 500miles. Intake from late model re, DOA c270 cam, thorley with 2.25 out.

first numbers
             |%CO2 %02 |          HC           | |        CO           | |        NO          |
test  RPM  meas   meas   max   ave   meas   max   ave   meas   max   ave   meas
15    1763 13.98  .82     146    335   44     1.04    2.34  .03    1136  2123 2392
25    2868 14.3    .39     118   285    25     1.32    2.62  .04    1222  2245 2769

So I fix my EGR(header gasket blocking tubes) and I have a code5(o2 sensor). I replaced the 02 and figure everthing will be good.

numbers from this morning.

              |%CO2 %02 |          HC          | |        CO           | |        NO         |
test RPM   meas   meas   max   ave   meas   max   ave   meas   max   ave   meas
15  1800   13.6    .43     146    43    119    1.04   .16    1.34   1136  406  1506
25  2775   13.8    .2       118    32     90     1.32   .15    1.16  1222  349   1453

What would cause the jump in the HC and CO? The truck feels like it is running good, alot better than before. The header has a crack in the primary, but not the primary with the 02 sensor. I think a new cat would fix it.

Why would the numbers jump, please explain.  I don't know what else to fix or check.

I take it  it's inspection time  and your off xx/xx
If your cats oringinal i say replace it  with a nice H.P. cat
What i do befor inspetions is  fill up on high octane  and add that emissons stuff U can get at the auto parts store   ,and run it for 2-3 days befor inspetion.

actually, its 10 months past.  I just graduated college so I finally have time to work on it.

I put a new cat in when I rebuilt the motor, 9.5k ago.  Since it has been running lean it might have cooked the cat.  I am thinking of getting another cat and installing two cats on for smog.

Your NOx emissions are still way too high.  you need to see if the EGR is actually opening.  pull the hose off of it and stick on a long piece of vac tubing.  start the truck and with it idling, suck on the hose(or use a vaccuum pump) to open the valve.  It should drop the idle way down and/or kill the motor if it is functioning correctly.  Also, I can't remember if the EFI uses the transducer to open the EGR like on the carbed engines...that thingy can cause some probs as well.
hope that helps.

The egr works, it will kill the motor.  I did all the usual stuff(oil, filter, air filter, plugs, cap, rotor) as well as resetting the valves, timing, fresh gas, new o2 sensor.  I just don't understand how the co's would go up after I fixed the egr.  The nox droped way down compared to what it was, how could the other two go up as much as they did?

Uncle Jesse

I know I had major problems getting my 90 to pass.  It seems the EGR has a narrow window of vacuum tolerance.  To little vacuum and the egr won't work enough, and too much and the egr will induce a lean misfire, causing the hc and co to go up, even with a fresh cat.  I had swapped transducers and valves to no avail.  Eventually I realized it didn't matter because it was a two speed idle test that doesn't count nox, so I couldn't tell you what the problem is.

you have to remember that any one thing changing will affect all things equally.  OK, now that you know it works, check it's vacuum supply.

all lines off the intake chamber had 25, throttle body had none at idle and constant throttle.  The lines on the tb showed vac when the engine would rev.

I greatly appreciate the help.

try advancing the timing, and get the cat glowing red hot and retest, this worked for me :beerchug:

:tantrum: yeah smog sucks :tantrum: I can't tell you how many vehicles I've junked cuz they wouldn't smog :headshake:

Yup, play with the timing. When I got my truck it barely ran because the previous owner tweaked the shiat out of the timing to get it to pass. But it did. Bad things about emissions is that there are a bunch of things that work together...or most the time dont. Hard to find which is causing the problem. I was going to mention a good healthy tune up but seems like you have already done that. I hope you get it to pass. Good luck

get a p o box in yreka, you dont have to smog there

I was born up there.  My dad worked at the firestation in weed.  A little more time and I will be out of this state.

good for you. thats all it takes,is one at a time. soon all that will be left are the parasitic freeloading liberals and all their money grubbing programs and nobody to support them. it really sucks that the smog program is based on population size, and some counties dont have to comply.
